Donna's Story
Life
Thought I better update what's going on in my life.... So much has changed.. I'm happier then I've ever been!! I'm retired from public work & no longer train field dogs. I miss it but not really. Texas is way to hot & humid any more for me!!
For the past 17 years, I have lived with the greatest guy on world. We were finally married on 9/15/2018. We have 14 grandkids, 7 great grandbabies and 1 chocolate & 4 black labs.. Since I started this we have lost 9 chocolate labs & 6 new born pups. So heart breaking. Out oldest was 17 yrs old. Now we only have 4 black labs, 1 yellow pup & 2 black pups 2 mons old. Sure was hoping for more chocolates but I love them all. Nothing else has changed. My husband has a few serious health problems but he's doing pretty good. My health is great!! Nothing serious thank God!!
We own a kennel and Wildlife Management Ranch in Central Texas. Thankfully we are retired from training hunt/retrieving dogs but this is what My days were like the last 10 years..... My days were so busy, starting before the sun comes up, with "kennel duty". Feeding and cleaning up after 5 four-legged "kids" takes just about the whole morning. We exercise and train 4 dogs for hunt and retrieving. It's so much fun but can be very exhausting and I love every minute out in the field.
Not doing good this any more either!! When Clint comes home in the evenings, we are back out in the field again, training. It's so rewarding to take our dogs to their first field trials and they walks away with their heads up high, knowing they did great, even if they didn't place.
Believe it or not, I get to throw dead ducks and pigeons for the dogs to find. We have one female that love to throw the pigeon up in the air and catch it. We have tired countless times to make her stop but she will do it every time. It's so funny and so far she has not dropped one. I've even seen the judges laugh at her. I can't think of a better way to spend the day. Working with my "kids" in the fresh air every day is great. We have lost Jackson, Tiny & Molly plus 3 other labs & 2 puppies in the last 6 years. Three of our dogs were search and rescue. Jackson did Human remains and narcotics, Tiny, live & wilderness finds and narcotics and Molly did disasters. All of ours dogs are AKC and UKC registered.
Our ranch has 104 acres. We have deer, dove, turkey, hogs and quail. Every year we have day leases during hunt season. For deer there is B...Expand for more
ow and rifle and shotgun for dove. We are trying to build up the quail poplulation so no hunting for them. So far we have no hogs but we do hear the turkey. I do some of the guides if Clint is away on a mission or if we have more hunters then he can handle. Our ranch is divided in half by a canyon so he takes one side and I do the other. Men are amazed that a short, chubbing "girl" can guide them around and knows what she is talking about (sorta). NO I do not field dress a deer. I've never been asked to, thankfully! All of our sons and daughters also help.
I have 3 boys, Clint has 1 girl and all those granbabies & greats!! They range from 5 to 30 years. My oldest son, Bill and wife, Tammy, adopted 3 kids plus their 3, plus the 7 greats, my 2nd son, Tim and wife Syntra have 2 boys and a girl. My youngest son, Matt and wife Nicola have 1 boy & 2 girls. Matt is Army SFC. He has been to Iraq 5 times. They were in Okinawa Japan for 3 yrs and currently he is the head recruiter in TX for the next 8 years. He will be medical discharged in March 2021. First time he's been so close to me in 25 yrs. Just 45 miles!!! Clint's daughter, Toni, has 2 kids. I never dreamed I would be so lucky to have 4 daughters and so many grandkids.
My boys laugh at me sometimes, because I wear camo, combat boots and carry a pistol on my hip. I go to Abilene to shop once a month for supplies and food and sometimes my daughters will drag me to the mall but they won't let me wear camo and I have to leave my gun at home. They don't see any humor in their mom wearing a gun to shop. I keep telling them this is Texas!! But I will always be an Arizona Cowgirl!!! I miss Arizona so much..... I specially miss Prescott where my sister Frances lives
& my favorite Thumb Butte Mountain is.
My life is exciting and beautiful and I would not change one single moment. Most of the time, I'm not sure if I'm coming or going but I figure I will catch up with myself one of these days. Well Its now 2021 and I still don't know which way I'm going! I still wouldn't change a thing. Well one thing & thats getting my grumpy old man to retire. He's been with EBAA iron for 48 yrs!! He's now the oldest employee there!!
I'm not much on camo anymore. I'm still a .cowgirl wearing boot & blue jeans. I'll probably be buried in them..
That's my whole life. Granbabies, dogs, grown kids and Clint. What else could I ask for?? Yes, God is a big part in my life!!
