Donna's Story

Life I was raised as Donna Marie Vergason, but my birth certificate is fake. My stepmother insisted she was my mother, and that I was "Austrian." When she died, I was going through her papers and realized that except for my dad, the info on my birth certificate was completely wrong, ...wrong height and age for my mother. Wrong name, too, as it turned out. I knew that the inner surface of my teeth was concave (an Asian trait, I learned later), not flat (a Caucasion trait). My mother was not Julia Balabanska Vergason, a Polish woman, although she raised me as her own and prevented any knowledge or contact with my real mother after the age of 3 years. Little did she know that at age 56 I would see a photograph of my dad's x-wife that had been sent to my great-grandmother, and RECOGNIZE my mama. My real mother was Imogene Nakoolani Eaton Vergason, a Hawaiian woman with a Chinese-Hawaiian mother and an Irish-English-German father. After investigating, we discovered a potential half-sister in Nevada: A DNA test was performed on the two o...Expand for more
f us and it confirmed that we are, indeed, half-sisters...same mother. What I had been told were just dreams turned out to be real memories ... I remember being cuddled and called "my little Leilani"...I remember seeing Julia push my mother out the door and lock it...I remember the words anuinui (rainbow) and wiki wiki (hurry up!) and mahalo (thank you)...and I remember being so tiny that when I stood up tall I looked our chickens right in the eye...and was afraid of them. That's early memory! I never got the chance to meet my mother once I was grown (although she didnt die until I was 29 years old), since it was kept secret from me. And my stepmother hated me because I looked and behaved just like my real mother. Never understood the reasons for her hatred until she died, and by then, my father and my real mother had both passed on within a year of each other. I don't blame my dad, though. He could not cross my stepmother. She was very controlling. Don't ever lie to your children or your step-children. They will hate you for it.
