Donna's Story
Life
After graduating from Holy Cross Hospital, I worked for twenty-six years, primarily in surgical intensive care and coronary intensive care in hospitals in Montreal, Calgary and San Francisco. I was head nurse in surgical intensive care at Montreal'Âs Jewish General Hospital before opening my own medical clinic, Doctor's Replacement Medical Clinic, which I owned and operated for twelve years.
My husband, Hy, and I lived on a farm on Rigaud Mountain for 20 years. He commuted to his business, Rendale (sweaters) and Dales (mens clothing) until he retired. While on our hobby farm, Hy played polo and I trained and showed horses in dressage.
Since retiring to Montreal, I have pursued my second career as a writer in accord with my life-long mission
to champion the nursing profession and to advocate for medical reform. My articles appear in news...Expand for more
papers as well as in medical newsletters and on medical websites. My book, Yes Sister, Memoir of a Young Nurse was published in 2005.
I now live with my husband in Montreal.
JANUARY, 2014
I wrote my story (above) about 8 years ago and this is a quick update. 2010 was a horribly sad year for me; my brother Allan suddenly passed away in September while scuba diving in the Arctic and my husband died in October. I am still living in Montreal with my little dog Ashley and have found a wonderful hobby, Ballroom Dancing! I love dancing and it's a great workout. I am competing at the bronze level right now. What fun!! I do try to get to Calgary every year for Holy Cross Hospital nurses' reunion, usually in late Sept. If any of you are in Calgary, let me know and we can have coffee and a chat about the good old days. BEST WISHES TO ALL IN THE NEW YEAR!
