Donna's Story

My Life I was a Rotary Exchange student my senior year to Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico so I did not graduate with the rest of the class. I decided to take the college entrance test and passed so I went to SOC with some of you. In high school I wanted to be an RN but was encouraged to aim higher by the school counselor since I did well on the PSAT test. I was taking general requirements and science classes for a year then transferred to OSU for a year. Then I decided to go to a less expensive school and decided on Idaho State University in Pocatello, ID. I finished the prerequisites and did get into Pharmacy school but got a "D" a lab class for not being accurate enough in measuring tare weights to the 1000th of a mg and for not being able to fold my papers, for the powders weighed, precisely enough (Ugh, both of these are things most drug dealers can do-joke intended!). I looked at nursing but there was a nursing glut at that time and I was discouraged from pursuing an RN degree. So I applied to the Speech Pathology and Audiology department. I got a BS in Speech Pathology in 1984 and an MS in Audiology in 1985. My first job was working for the British Columbia Ministry of Health. I was was assigned to the South Central Health in Kamloops, BC and spent Christmas of 1985 getting settled in. In Kamloops, BC, Canada during 1986 while I was working as an Audiologist. I went on a paddleboat cruise on the Thompson River 'for singles' hoping to meet some girlfriends to hang out with but ended up meeting Jeffrey and his mother (both singles) instead. Jeff and I went out to a movie the next night; he was a landed immigrant like me from the US who moved to Canada as a child. We lived together in Canada. In 1990, I decided to move back to Oregon to finally attend Nursing School. I attended Clackamas Community college and worked at Dammasch State Mental Hospital. Jeffrey moved to Oregon shortly and we were married in 1992. I continued working as an RN at Dammasch until it closed in 1994 due to the Federally mandated deinstitutionalization of psychiatric patients. I didn't reali...Expand for more
ze that my job would move to the community with my assigned patient group (who were relocated to downtown Portland). Jeff and I decided to move since his job was being discontinued at that time. He wanted Hawaii, I thought Texas would be better for jobs and cost of living...so we compromised on Florida where I could learn to scuba dive in warm water. We came to the Tampa area in 1994, I had a couple of pool RN jobs the got hired at Morton Plant Hospital in 1995. Morton Plant Hospital has partnered with many other hospitals over the years and is known as BayCare. It is the largest health provider in Tampa's three county area. I am still working as a Psychiatric RN on a Pediatric Unit. I have been a shift Supervisor for several years now. Jeff and I divorced in 2009 and he now lives in Arizona near his brother. I live on my own in a nice villa in Tarpon Springs, Florida. I live only 2 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and can ride my bike down to the beaches nearby. I live a quiet life overall. I never had children though I meant to. Luckily, I work with them so I still have children in my life. I do have sweet, kind boyfriend of 4 1/2 years named Mark who works as a Computer Programmer. My Likes Bike riding, watching sunsets, water activities, movies and socializing with my friends. I am a Parrothead (part of the Jimmy Buffett fan club) and attend activities with the group. There goal is "to have a great time and leave the world a better place" by cleaning the beaches, volunteering and donating to local charities. Every March we have a trop rock music festival call 'Music on the Bay' which supports Shriner's club hospitals. Last year the club was able to donate $50, 000. My Pets I have 2 cats currently, Mia, a female grey shorthair with some stripes on her legs and spots on a tan belly, She fetches cat toy ball and is very playful. The other is Fluffy, Mark's cat, a male long hair grey and white tuxedo cat-he loves ice and comes out to get some whenever he hears the ice dispenser running on the fridge. Both are pretty lovey-dovey. Life is good :)
