Donna's Story

The teacher I would love to see again is my third and fourth grade teacher Mrs. Dinkin, because of her wanderlust - we went on over 20 field trips during the two years I had her. What teacher in their right mind takes 30 nine year olds from Long Island to Philadelphia - for the day? Best school field trip ever!. If I won $100 million, I'd give half of it to my sister, then spend some on shoes , and an ocean front home in Maine and save half of what was left and give the remaining half of that away. My best friend would tell you I'm warm and generous, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as distant and aloof... Everyone I've met lately seems to remember me smoking and are surprised I no longer smoke. Well, folks, I never thought I would quit, I never wanted to. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process, I know if I was still smoking, and alive, I would be broke. I was headed towards three packs a day. One lovely spring day I decided to skip my afternoon class and head home for a bike ride. I didn't make it home for...Expand for more
another week. The swings at Hill and Plain School called to me as I was driving by. I went for a ride on the swings....the swing I was on broke. All I remember is my right hand falling to my side and coming to, face down, on the asphalt. I broke both of my wrists. Casts up to my shoulders for six weeks and another set for four weeks. Everyone assumes I stopped smoking because I couldn't get my hands to my mouth. Not so. It was the Drugs!!! I had demerol and morphine for a couple of days and by the time I came out of the haze my body no longer craved nicotine. And that folks is how I quit smoking!!. I can't even believe those of you who even remembered the brand I smoked.....They recently took the swings down and I asked for a piece, told them why, of course, and they still said no. I walk. I walk off steam, stress, you name it. I walked off 60 pounds. I also walked off my knee. Just had knee replacement surgery, no walk in the park, pun intended. This is turning out to be one of the more frustrating events of my medical adventures.
