Donna (Stroud)'s Story

Updated July, 2013............ Life after CUHS.............. After graduating from CUHS in 1960, my family moved to Riverside, Ca. where I graduated from Riverside City College. In November 1961, at the age of 19, I married Russ Martin in Riverside, 7 months later I joined him in the Philippine Islands at Clark Air Force Base, where our first son, Russell Jr. was born in August, 1962; after two years overseas, we were sent to McChord AFB in Tacoma WA, where we lived until 1973. During this time, we had a second son, Del-Wayne in 1964. We were also foster parents for several years, taking care of newborns until they could be adopted. During this time, we also adopted a foster daughter , Carla, who had been physically abused as an infant. In 1969, I entered nursing school at Tacoma(Wa) General Hosp. School of Nursing and graduated in 1972 with my RN (six weeks after the birth of my 3rd son, David Scott Martin). In 1973, we moved back to Riverside, CA, where I worked in a 450 bed hospital in the Neonatal Intensive Care unit as Asst. Head Nurse- then I was promoted to 3-11 Nursing Supervisor, a position I held for the next 5 years. In 1976, I also enrolled in the first Nurse Practitioner program at Univ. of CA at San Diego and graduated in 1979. I became Board Certified as a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP) in December, 1979. I was also the first Nurse Practitioner in private practice in Riverside County. I got divorced the same year I graduated as an NP and remained single for the next 15 years, building a career and somehow, getting my four kids raised. During my career, I held several interesting NP & Administrator positions in Saudi Arabia, California, Oregon, Arizona and Iowa. In 1994, I finally settled down and married Dale Netherton (a native Iowan) who had retired after 22 years with General Mills. Dale has an...Expand for more
MBA as well and just this week had his third book published. So, here I am in Iowa, 2,000 miles from CUHS and living on 300 acres alongside the beautiful Des Moines River with a wonderful husband, lots of animals and for the final 8 years of my career--I held a part-time job as an NP. Oh, how I loved all 'my' kids over the years ! I finally fully retired after 26 years of active practice as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in June, 2005. In addition, I am blessed with two fantastic grandchildren, Johnathan Martin and Alicia Martin--both now in college in California. After I retired,to keep myself out of trouble, I now have a genealogy research business(Park Street Research, LLC at parkstreetreseach.org)....along with my partner, Marcia Bignall, from Minneapolis. Since 2009, we haves performed genealogical research at the request of coroners and medical examiners from across the US. Our job is basically 'behind-the -scenes'-- we research and identify the closest next-of-kin for those deceased persons who have died with no known relatives. We provide a written report to the coroner who officially notifies the family of the death of their relative. It's a lot of 'detective' work and very satisfying to hear about some of the families that we have helped to find out what happened to their loved ones, some of them after years of estrangement. As of July, 2013, we have assisted in over 265 cases. Well, That's about it from Iowa ! Please drop me an email if you have a free moment..........I'd love to catch up on what you're doing. So sorry I missed the 50th Reunion !... I already have reservations for the Sept 2013 mini-reunion in San Diego ! By the way, I have really appreciated Nita Mallobox asking each of us to write our life story...I have enjoyed reading all of them. My best to all of you, Donna (Stroud) Martin-Netherton
