Doreen's Story

Life My Dad, Ray, died after unexpected, unknown illness - Aug. 1999, after his 48th canoe trip with the explorers to Canada. This has been a very difficult loss for me. We were very close. Brother, Dan, has carcenoid cancer. It is a slow growing cancer, and right now he is holding his own. Brother-in-law, Tom, has Mantle cell lymphoma and has had 2 Stem Cell Transplants and is hoping for a third one, but has some heart damage from chemotherapy, so we are waiting to see if that improves. Mom is well. She will be 91 in April. She had to give up her singing, due to health. She is living in assisted living at River Terrace a mile from our home. Still married to Joe. Have one son, Scott, 39, and one grandson, Seth, 20. Both are great joys. Still singing. I am active in the Wells Community Theater that started in Feb. 2000. We perform in the old BHS auditorium. I have been in "Music Man", "Sound of Music", "Annie", "Oklahoma", "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", "Fiddler on the Roof", "The King and I" , and "Oliver". Love it! Unfortunately, we are not doing one this summer. We have also had performances at the Embassy with 3 of our productions. What a thrill! Seth has been in four productions with me. He loves it too, but lives in north Ft. Wayne, and chose football. He will be a Junior at Northrop High School. Update June 7th 2008: My brother, Dan, Passed away in Colorado Springs on May 24th 2008, from Carcenoid Cancer. My brother in law, Tom was just told that they are stopping his current chemotherapy, because it is not working. We don't know what is next. Grandson, Seth, enlisted in the Marine Corps. He has one more year of school to finish, then will go. (Yikes!) Currently we are performing "Seussical the Musical" at the old Bluffton High School auditorium. Update July 10, 2009: Grandson Seth has entered the US Marine Corps, and is currently in San Diego in Boot Camp. Wells Community did another musical, "Godspell", in June, and I was in the adult chorus. I am singing on the Worship Team at First Church of Christ. Send me an email, and I will write back. ating from Nursing School for 4 yrs. as a Psychiatric Nurse. Stayed home for 5 years with my son. Worked Cooper Nursing Home for about 1 1/2 yrs. , then left for Caylor Nickel Hospital as an ER nurse for 22 1/2 yrs. Loved ER, but after my Dad died, I needed a break. "Retired" to run home business- didn't like it and went back to nursing after 1 yr. Worked at Lutheran Hospital on IV team for 5 mo. night shift. Loved it, but was also keeping grandson during the day, and at that time the night shift didn't work out. Worked Family Hospice for 6 mo,(it wasn't my thing) and I missed acute care. Now I am working in Dr. Merkle's Family Practice office 4 1/2 days a week, and am very happy there. Update 2006: Dr. Merkle downsized his office, so I am now working at Indiana Medical Associates in Ft. Wayne. We are a multispecialty office, and I was hired as a float nurse, but have been working in Internal Medicine at the W. Jefferson office attached to Lutheran Hospital. Update 2007: Indiana Medical Associates had an opening in their outpatient Endoscopy Center (Northeast Indiana Endoscopy Center), so I transferred last August. I really like it - it is much better than office nursing. I feel like a nurse again. Update 2008: My brother Dan passed away in May. Update 2011: I am now working part time as a nurse at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home. Update 2013: Mom passed away June 16, 2012 at age 92, after a year long decline in her health. I took a family medical leave so that I could be there for her, and retired in April 2012. We were blessed with the birth of a second grandson Kayden Thomas Ayers March 23, 2012. Mom got to see him and hold him before she passed. I love retirement. I am still actively singing on the worship team at First Church of Christ, and on the board and active in Wells Community Theater. I got to be in our last musical, "Guys and Dolls". 2-22-18 Update We have added a great grandaughter, Sophia, age 3, to our family. Our oldest grandson Seth and his family moved to Bluffton in June, so I take care of Sophia while they are at work. I'm still active in our local theater, and am still singing on my church;s worship team.
