Doreen's Story
My family lived in Lower Halawa Housing on Saratoga Drive from '60-'62 prior to moving to Guam. My brother Herman and I attended Aiea Intermediate. He was in 7th and I in 8th. I remember being one of the first 9th graders to attend Aiea High. The school only had 9th and 10th grades then, because it was still under construction. We lived next door to my cousin Walter Wood or Woody as we called him. Across the street lived the Vendiola
's,Park's,Gueso's,Barnes,Mauga's. In the back of us lived David Conceicao,Yvonne Ortiz,Janice Takushi to name a few. I hung around with Sharon Torres,Gwen Kanoho,Emiy Manuma and others while I was attending Aiea High. They called me Peanuts back then,a nickname given to me by Andy Sniffen. I use to go with Paul Kolish before my Dad got stationed to Guam. I also had an older brother that played for the Radford Rams the years that we lived in Aiea. n 45 years since we moved.
My Dad got stationed to Andersen AFB in Guam from '62-'64,came back to Hawaii, got married and had 3 daughters who are now 40,39,and 33.Have 9 grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters.I've been divorced for 32 years, but found pleasure in caring for my daughters and watching my granchildren grow up.We came through it on our own.
I had an older brother who attended Radford High before we moved to Guam and that was from '60 - '62. His given name was Frederick Walter Jarrett, but everyone knew him by his nickname, "Spider".Unfortunately,he died in the Vietnam War in '68.Not a day goes by that I don't think about him and how much the family misses him!
I'm the eldest of 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
I worked for 2 title companies on Oahu and the Department of Health before taking early retirement in June of '08.
I've been living here on Maui for over a year helping my 2nd daughter with her twin girls who are 2 1/2 and a son who's 1 1/2.We have our hands full. But as a grandparent,I need to enjoy them, because they grow up so fast.
