Doreen's Story
Life
I finished American University in 1980 and stayed in Wash.DC where I worked in the advertising biz as an Account Exec. and thereafter worked freelance in the DC film production biz while managing a Dance Studio. In 1986, married my husband Marc, who is a jewelry designer and sailor. We moved to SF in 1987 and had our first child Maya in October of that year. 2 years later we began building our boat and home, a 33 feet long and 20 feet wide catamaran named IMANI. Our son Tristan was born in Oct 1993, just 6mos before we launched IMANI. We moved the boat to Sausalito, CA, just across the Golden Gate bridge from SF and joined a live-aboard co-op community, Galilee Harbor and spent the next 2 1/2 years finishing the boat. In December 1996 we sailed IMANI to Mexico and enjoyed 6 mos in the beautiful southland. We returned to Sausalito with the boat in the summer and returned again to Mexico that winter. h Polynesia and have since then crossed the Pacific Ocean into the Philippine Sea across the China Sea and through the Malacca Strait to Thailand then the Maldives, Oman and Yeman before heading up the Red Sea--stopping in Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt before heading into the Med June 2003. Summer in the Med sent us to Gilbralta and then the Canary Islands by Oct and then Dec 11 we set off across the Atlantic. Arrived Jan 6 2004 in St. Barth and spent winter season in Dominican Republic, Great Exuma, Bahamas and Jamaica before going through Panama Canal in April 04. Sailed up to Mexico and then to SF Bay arriving back to Galilee Harbor, Sausalito June 18th 2004. Thus ending our circumnavigation. Our daughter Maya completed studies at Hampshire College with a bachelors in Animal Behavior/Computer Animation. Son Tristan is still homeschooling. Doreen is presently Harbor Manager of Galilee and Marc is designing jewelry as well as serving as Sailing Coach to Bay Area Sailors. We really enjoy travel and discovery.
