Doreen's Story

Hi, everyone! After high school, I became a secretary, got married, and moved to Columbus, Ohio, where I was an assistant bookkeeper for a large department store. When that marriage didn't work out, I moved back to North Haven and got my old job back as a secretary. I got an associates degree from Middlesex Community College and a BS in biology from Southern Connecticut State. I remarried and we moved to Portland, Oregon. Moses Lake, Washington, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and back to Moses Lake for my husband's job. And, yes, I did experience the eruption of Mt . St. Helen in 1980. Moses Lake was one of the hardest hit areas with ash from the volcano. Now, that was different!! I had a son in 1981 and a daughter in 1984. We then moved to Clarkston, Washington, again for my husband's job. I went back to school and earned a teaching certificate in science from Lewis-Clark State College. I was a biology teacher for the local high school, taught in the alternative school and ran the after school credit-makeup program. One more move, in 1991, to Spokane, Washington, where I earned a masters degree in teaching with an additional endorsement in special education. After graduation in 1995, I began teaching for Spokane Public Scho...Expand for more
ols. My second marriage ended in divorce, as well. I have been at my current school for 19 years, teaching biology and environmental chemistry. Twenty years ago this month (January 2016), I slipped and fell on ice and broke my right ankle, tibia and fibula. It was a nasty break and after several surgeries, I needed to have a prosthetic ankle inserted. All was well until it failed and a component had to be replaced in 2008. Another long recuperation! Seven weeks into the school year this year, I was hit by a car while crossing the street at my school. My left tibia was broken and I have been off work ever since. So, how many people can say that they've broken both of their tibia bones??!! I am looking forward to going back to work next month and retiring in a couple of years. I don't plan to stay here in Spokane, although there is nowhere like the northwest for natural beauty and wide-open spaces. I am a Seattle Mariners and Seahawks fan (how could you not like the Seahawks?) so don't want to move too far away. I go to Mariners games every year, but have yet to see a live Seahawks game. I see that there are no other schoolmates who live here in Washington State, but if you are ever here to visit, please look me up.
