Dori's Story
Well, for whoever is interested, after I graduated HS, I went to work at Centel-then it was the major regular phone company. Their "teletype" circular page reader was the first "fax" machine! Anyway, at 19 had a chance to leave Vegas and took it without hesitation! Never wanted to grow up in that type of society anyway. Just as I thought-after 3 months of hard trying-I would never get a job and almost went "galavanting" across the country with a group of young people selling home cleaning products, I got a call from Western Electric, who was going to change out all Phx & Tucson systems to the Computerized system of telephone equipment used today. Stayed working for them for 2 and 1/2 years when they had the big AT&T break-up and I was laid off. It was a very specialized field so hard to get another job like it. , so went back to College for a couple courses - then into the business management field via receiptionist; then office manager; then added editor& all accounting functions, etc. Got so high in my salary in Phx over 19 years that I could not compete with anyone else for the same job because I did not have a degree. Well, housing prices were up; jobs were down, and we (my partner and I) moved to New Mexico to build our dream house and become semi-retired. After busting my back in 2004, it became "disability/retirement." Anyway, most is well, own 20 acres bordering the National Forest in one of the most beautiful spots of New Mexico you could ever see, and love every minute of it, except the 10 miles of (sometimes) graveled roads, usually not maintained well, and very bad for my back, but I would not change a thing as this is the place most people just dream about, and I made it a reality.
