Dorie's Story

I was quiet during high school and was probably considered a "book worm." I stayed active with my church and loved skiing and skating during the winter. After high school, I attended 2 colleges but then met the man, John Camp from Whitesboro, that I was married to for 44 years. He was in the Air Force and was sent to Hof, Germany in July 1967. I joined him and we spent a fun 3 years touring Germany and surrounding countries. Our son was born in Hof soon before we returned to the U.S. We had many assignments in the U.S. including Texas and Monterey, CA, but we returned to Germany in 1972. My daughter was born during this time. We were then sent to Monterey again, and even though we loved CA, we decided to move back to New York to be with family. We were both hired in 1979 by the Department of Defense at Fort Meade, MD and spent the next 25 years working for the DoD. We enjoyed Maryland because of its central location and variety of activities - from the beaches to the mountains and we decided to retire here. We did not want to return to Utica because of the tough winters, so had a house built in Ocean Pines, MD, 6 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. I love the community and have many friends here. We both retired from the DoD as Senior Intelligence Analysts. After retirement, I was not ready to quit working, but wanted something totally different from sitting at a computer all day. took advantage of my hobby, making beaded jewelry, and went to work at a bead store, which I eventually managed. Unfortunately, the economy was not healthy enough to keep the store open, but I don't miss going to work every day. My husband John died in May 2011 at the tender age of 65. It has taken a while to adjust, but I am enjoying living alone and pursuing my hobbies. My husband did not have a lot of energy towards the end of his life so we stayed close to home. John and I played NTN trivia for years and met a lot of friends - his handle was JONDOE, (a combination of John and Dorie) so when I traded in his large truck with the JONDOE license plate, I kept the tags. You'll see my vehicle in August and will immediately know who it is I have a travel companion and we just returned from a week in Cancun. His wife died prematurely from ovarian cancer. They were part of our trivia crew and we all used to go out together, so I have known him for many years. He wanted to travel after caring for his wife for 3 years, so we started going on trips together and have several vacations planned during the rest of the year. I continue to make beaded jewelry and have a small business called "Camp's Collectibles." I sell my jewelry but don't make a huge profit - it's satisfying creating something that I can be proud of. I hope to see you all in August - will any of us recognize each other?
