Neil's Story
Life
My one and only son, Eric , is almost finished with his bs AT UCR . I left so.cal to go to SUNY AT Oswego. Played hockey & studied. Moved to Santa Cruz, Ca. circa 1979. Settled down , had a wonderfull baby boy , unfortunately it was with the wrong woman. I STARTED a machine shop, worked ithe shop and raised Eric by myself for the next 9 years. TOO MUCH FOR ONE PERSON.GOT INTO A LITTLE TROUBLE AND SOLD MY SHOP. I now supervise the fabrication division of an OEM of medical devices in Campbell, Ca..
The photo : Sold my macHine shop, temporarily retired, and fished hard for 3 years. No worrk, no son , just fishing. caught more fish in 3 years than most people catch in their lifes.Dabbled in commercial fishing for a couple years. That is until one morning -- we had been out for 2 days 12-15 miles west...Expand for more
of Pt. Reyes near San Francisco(over the Cordell Banks seamount) catching about 35oo to 4000 lbs of salmon per day. It was the "Motherload" in 3 more days we were going to head in , sell our fish and rest for a couple days. On the morning of July 22 2002 AT approx 6:00[the us coast guard has it AT 6:02 am] i was awaken ater being thrown across the focsle , finally mad it topside to see a huge-gantic wall of steel ripping by. Our boat was 60 ft long and it had , maybe a 6 ft draft. We were rammed , in pea soup fog, by the "Dao Andes" a 680 ft cargo freighter converted into a wood chip carrier. Scariest thing ever, still cant believe we survived. Not only did we make it back to SF. , but we sold the 7,000 lbs of salmon we had in the hold.
Funny how things turn out!
Kind regards to all,
Neil L. Dorin
