Doris's Story

Hi All 1969 Alumni, I didn't graduate with everyone but Miriam Ann Carter my sister did. I graduated in Great Falls, Montana. I married in my Junior year of high school. My husband was in the Air Force and we went to Montana for his last 2 years in the service. I finished my Senior year at Great Falls High. I really finished 1/2 a year, our school in Alaska was way ahead of the lower 48. I was a mid-line student in Fairbanks and an honor student in Montana. I went to school for 1/2 of the year and 1/2 of the day. It was great since I had a baby to take care of, our son Sean, who turns 41 today 8/31/09. We have a beautiful daughter born in 1972. We moved to Fairfield, Ca. for 11 1/2 years. Bill my husbands family had slowly moved out from Wheeling, WV. His brothers got out of the service and his Mom and Dad decided to move also. We lived in Northern Calif., where Bill worked with Kaiser Steel and Ball Can Corp. and I went back to school at the Jr. College and recieved my A.S. in Science and A.A. in Nursing. I worked for a year at our local hospital and we moved to So. Calif. for the next 28 years in Simi Valley, Calif. Bill worked in the can business, 12 years, camera car biz for 1 year(movies) and then in the building materials business for 14 years.I worked at our local h...Expand for more
ospital and all around the San Fernando Valley and at UCLA ER until 1988. I decided nursing wasn't my life long passion and I went back to college when I was 41yrs. old and got a B.A. degree in Fashion Design. I have always sewn because if any of you remember I was so skinny I could never fit into regular clothes. I made costumes and did set nursing for the T.V. movie industry for about 10 years. Our son married in the mean time and has our first 2 grandkids a boy Jonah and a girl Amelia. Then our daughter Shannon married at 25 and has had 2 boys, Jesse and Jamey. I had a business for a couple years making native American and western clothing but was not good at selling myself so I worked for someone else making leather horsemanship outfits. Then I finally went back into Nursing in the ER, my other passion. I did this until 2004 when I became very ill and had to quit working. We moved back to Bill's home town of Wheeling, WV and live in the country and care for 2 1/2 acres of beautiful land. Bills family moved back to Wheeling ahead of us except his youngest brother who lives in Reno. Our kids and grandkids live in So. Calif. Bill is retired and I developed Fibromyalgia after my illness and can't work in nursing. I sew occasionally and really get a workout in my garden.
