Doris's Story

Schoolmates probably don't remember too much about me because I was so quiet. Also, I was not allowed to join any clubs or activities, so that kept me isolated at my home. We graduated on a Sunday and I began working the next morning at West Side Furn. Co. as a receptionist/telephone operator. A coworker introduced me to my future husband. I got a better job at Sheffield-Bendix as an engineering secretary. Once I married and had a child, I quit working and we moved to Englewood. I realized my childhood dream of having my own horse, but sold it after 4 years when the recession of '82 hit. At that time, I went back to work. Jobs were in short supply, so I worked 6 mo. at Rite Aid until I was hired by the Federal Gov. I retired 5 years ago, after working 25 years there. The last few years, I was working mostly for the health insurance. We moved several times over the early years as my husband was a real estate salesman and kept finding "deals." After the recession I spoke of, he changed professions. But every time we moved, we stayed within a mile or two. We had originally come to Englewood because my mom and her family lived there. About 15 years ago, we built my dream house and my mom moved with us into her own "mother-in-law" apt. behind the garage. About 7 years ago, she passed away and now we are thinking about our next move. But we have to wait until the economy gets better before we can sell. We are still playing with ideas. Maybe we will move into Downtown Dayton where we will be close to shows and lots of weekend activities. At least we will move somewhere smaller and with no or minimal yard work, ha ha. Presently, I don't feel I can leave my toddler grandson, as I have been his main babysitter and we are so attached to one another. One of my biggest surprises is that when I went to my five year reunion, I felt equal and just as good as everyone else...Expand for more
. Go figure. I always wondered what happened to a teacher I had named Mr. Maze. All the girls thought he was cute and funny and had crushes. But one day, he wasn't at school any longer. No explanation was given for his disappearance. Did anyone else out there ever wonder about it or find out the reason he left? I would imagine most of our teachers have passed away by now. Good grief, are we really 65? I have only really kept in touch with one of my classmates, Mary Lou Sharp. We live in adjoining towns. We lost touch for several years, but now hear from one another maybe once a month or so. I am hoping to make contact with my neighborhood girlfriend, Linda Lee Holler. (presently awaiting to hear from her via Classmates) We lost touch during that year that was between my graduation and hers. It was a busy year for me with working, shuffling boyfriends, my parents divorcing and my dad dying. Then the next year, I married and had my son. Another surprising thing about me is that for about a 10-year period in the 90's, my husband and I began taking dance lessons at the Dayton Two-Steppers Club. We really enjoyed dancing and making "dance friends" with so many people. Sadly, the club ran its course and dissolved. Now we can barely remember any of the dance moves. Our church has always been another source of activity for us. We didn't have any church connections while growing up, so decided to explore the possibility after our son was born. We have always been pretty involved with whatever is going on there. I also volunteer at the Randolph Twp. History Center, here in Englewood. My ancestors have been in the Englewood, Union, Trotwood, Dayton and W. Milton area for the past 200 years. Genealogy is another hobby. I wonder if anyone ever uses all the space they give us to write our story? I'm pretty windy, but whew! I wonder if anyone will ever read this?
