Dorothy's Story

Last weekend as I embarked on a 5.5 mile hike with Mocha, my 2 ½ year old golden retriever, it dawned on me that my 50th birthday was rapidly approaching. My mind began to churn with questions like; what does 50 look like? What does 50 feel like? What does 50 act like? The first 50 years of my life were incredible as I reflected back. I grew up in a big family with lots of brothers and sisters. We didn't have a lot of material things but we had each other. My grandparents made a trip out to our house every Saturday to visit with us and they came with lots of love, hugs and conversation. When they would take a trip it always included at least one of their grand children. Hawaii was my favorite of the many trips I enjoyed with them. But with the seasons, they have passed on leaving me with some wonderful memories. Adult life would bring new experiences such as being a wife and mother of 3 very sports minded boys. We enjoyed Little League baseball games, PAL football, CYO basketball and Karate when the boys were young and we gradually moved into high school sports as the boys grew. urdays were full of the anticipation of a great game, but I admit, some of the games came with upsets when one boys would miss a touch down, or strike out. They were always so hard on themselves. In my late 30's I found myself single again and embraced it for what it was. My job is very satisfying and I have had the enjoyment of traveling both in an out of the country for work. Last year I spent about 3 weeks in Beijing where I found sometime to visit many attractions including the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and enjoyed local events such a river rafting trip and an outing to the Pearl Market. We hiked the beautiful country side where we stumbled on a remote village. The people I came across while in Beijing were friendly and they know how to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. Ok, but some of the cab rides were scary. My life is not all work; I enjoy volunteering locally and spending time with friends and family. As my thoughts catch up with me and I look forward, I have decided that I would embrace the next 50 years of my life the same way I have embraced the first 50 years, with passion, love, spontaneity and joy.
