Doug's Story
Life
I'm an IT manager with The Home Depot corporate. My family and I live just outside Atlanta.
--After High School I went to the University of Tennessee as an electrical engineering/computer science major.
--When I ran out of money for school in 1984, I joined the Air Force and was trained as a computer specialist. I got to live in southern Spain, travel around Europe, and serve at the Cheyenne Mountain Complex (the underground complex not very accurately depicted in the movie "War Games" with Mathew Broderick).
--After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, I did a few odd jobs while saving money to go back to college. I was a bartender, nightclub disk jockey, US Census supervisor, and salesman.
--My wife, Susan, and I married in 1991 and we had our daughter Rowan in 1993. I also finally graduated from the University of Tennessee that year with a BFA in graphic design. I worked as a freelance designer and art director for awhile and then went to work for TVA in corporate communicatio...Expand for more
ns. After TVA I went back into IT at Theta Systems in Oak Ridge and then, in 1995, was recruited to move to Atlanta and join a small multi-media and software company called GRA.
--In 1995, we also had two boys--Connor and Logan (no, not twins but 10 months apart).
--By 1999, I'd been promoted to VP of Ops at GRA and we'd grown the company to over 140 people. GRA was acquired in 1999 and I left to join iXL, an Internet consulting firm. I held consulting and executive positions in a couple of other IT companies and in the fall of 2004 joined The Home Depot's Business Intelligence department.
