Doug's Story
I'm still around to enjoy much after all these years. I tell people they didn't call my generation "Baby Boomers" for nothin. We just Bang Heads, and keep on moving on.
I attended Broadcasting College after high school, although, I didn't carry it to any higher level. I met a girl and got married and had two kids. My first wife was also a 70' grad only from Wilbur Wright. We parted ways after 8 or so years.
After 12 years of running, sowing more oats, and just doing crazy things I met that little Cheerleader I had always thought of, and we married. My wife now is a former Brookville High School cheerleader for cross country, and wrestling when they still had them. As the quote in her photo says, yep, she was entering kindergarten when our class graduated. Actually gave my honey a chance to think all the difference over prior to any commitments. Well, here we are after almost 18yrs now and a 13yr old later.
I played some AA-League Baseball in the Dayton area when I was 21 for about two years. I tried out for a Trotwood team and didn't make the squad, and thought thats just wrong as I always thought I was an ok ballplayer. I acted on my thoughts and formed my own AA Team and we beat Trotwood all thee times we played them. Nice little stick it in your face kind of thoughts there. Lee Griffith from good ole' Stebbins was my Shortstop, and I played some 2nd base and outfield as well as coach.
I entered the Army in 75' with my younger brother Tim, and was separated with end of service in 78' after my three active years. I really wish I had stayed, as I loved the military life and times, but thats just hindsight now.
I think I jelled as an athlete after high school, and have kept that attitude to this day. It's too bad you didn't put forth some of those efforts you know you could have back then, but many of us have those stories to tell.
My brother Tim (75') and a State Qialifying Wrestler for Stebbins traveled with me and some other athletes for a couple of summers in the wrestling circuit enjoying the competition. We really understood what top notch w...Expand for more
as after a few travels. We both have kept in the Wrestling scene for many years now. Tim was the assistat Stebbins Wrestling coach for 9'yrs, and I still help coach for the Stebbins Youth Group. Tim's olest son Tim took 3rd in the state of Texas in 04'. My son Chad (91' Stebbins grad), played 4yrs Soccer, and 4yrs Wrestling for the Indians, with a 3rd place Sectional finish in 91'.
I have three kids of my own, as well as three step kids. Our kids go Chad-36, Celeste-32, Jessica-23, Andrew-21, Faith-18, and Lucas-13.
Chad and Andrew are both in the Army with Chad being an Officer at the US War College, and And Andrew is a PFC stationed at Ft.Stewart Georgia. Both sons are IRAQ veterans and Andrew is going back this year (09'). Chad is a possible deployment to Afghanistan sometime in (11'). We are proud of them both.
I guess you can say I am an Old School Parent in the fact that I Push the kids still, as I always have. I am a hard Parent, although Fair I think. We all want our kids to achieve better than we I believe, and hope for the best.
Staying in shape has always been something I have preached and preached since graduating.....My cardiologist (I've had two heart attacks) say's if I had not been in such good shape at the time of them, I simply would not be hear. I believe him, and also think the "Big Guy" Upstairs had a lot to do with it also. My attacks were in 02' and 03', and I have yet to miss a season coaching the kids in wrestling.
I believe we should all take part in our Alma Matta in some way or another....volunteer for something, or become a coach in an athletic event. I have much Pride in coming from "Mad River" and giving back in some way makes me feel good, and would love to see many more put their foot forward to do what they can as well.
I enjoyed my years at Stebbins, and think our class was a good addition to the Graduation Scene for the school system. I wouldn't take it back for the world. I hope the 40th reunion goes well, and hope to attend as well.
From one Grad to another, keep it going, step up front and "Go Indians"!!
