Doug's Story

After high school I went the University of Virginia where I got a degree in marketing and finance. Then I spent a little over a year in NYC, which was great. I had a great apartment with Jeff Abt way up on the upper east side (95th & 3rd) and we had a ton of friends in to visit almost every weekend. Our apartment was on the 34th floor and we had a great view towards midtown. It was like a year-long party. I¿m really glad I did that ¿ great memories. I¿m also glad I left ¿ it would have gotten really old really fast before too long. Living in the city could definitely take a toll on you. Then I actually went back to Fairfield for about 6 months to take a job with a real estate syndicator in Southport. Of course, this was 1989 and the northeast real estate market was starting to collapse (as well as the southeast market, where they had most of their investments). They restructured and eliminated my position, but had properties in Southern California and offered to send me out here to work with one of their affiliated management companies. I figured I¿d have some fun in the California sun for a couple of years then go back to school or somehow end up back on the east coast, but once I got out here I was hooked ¿ there was no way I was going back to all that humidity in the summers and cold winters unless it was a phenomenal opportunity. I worked in commercial real estate for most of the 90s, then jumped on the dot-com bandwagon in 2000, just in time for it to crash. In 2001, I started a computer consulting business with a techie friend of mine and that went pretty well for about 5 years, but even though we were good partners, we just didn¿t have the same vision for the company¿s future, so he bought me out, and I went back to commercial real estate. A bit of a mistake ¿ I just wasn¿t into real estate anymore, so I just make a complete career change in July 2008 and now I¿m a recruiter (aka a headhunter). I recruit for logistics and supply chain positions nationwide. The company's name is Searchforce Advisors (searchforcecorp dot com). It¿s great ¿ I¿m on the phone and doing email all day long, which are things I like to do anyway, and I¿m working from home, which is great. I think this is going to be a great career for me ¿ we¿ll see. It should be very lucrative, too, but it takes a few little while to ramp up, so we'll see how it goes. I met my wife, Rosina, on New Year¿s Day, 1995. I proposed after dating for quite a while on New Year¿s Day 1999, and we were married in March of 2000. After a long ...Expand for more
and expensive process, we finally got her pregnant and had our only child, a girl named Analis in April 2007. Rosina was a fashion designer when I met her, but that turned out to be a very cutthroat and unpleasant business. So much stuff was getting outsourced to overseas ¿ a ton of companies were going out of business. Shortly before we got married she took a job with Mattel, which is headquartered out here in the LA area, which was pretty cool because they made us a Barbie and Ken set wearing pretty good replicas of our wedding attire. She designed outfits for Cabbage Patch Kids and some other dolls while she was there ¿ but never got on the elite Barbie team. Mattel was tanking then, and she got let go about 8 months before the wedding, which actually worked out well because she was able to devout a lot of time to preparing for the wedding. She designed and made her own dress as well as all the bridesmaid dresses and the flower girl dresses. She also made the party favors and some other things ¿ it saved us a ton of money, so it made up for her lack of income. Anyway, shortly after we got married, she got fed up with fashion and design and took a job through a temp agency in human resources. She loved it, went and got a certification, got hired into a permanent position and has done really well. She changed companies, got promoted, and is now the Director of Human Resources at the Radisson Hotel at the LAX airport. I¿m really proud of her ¿ she¿s done really well. Our daughter is now (8/31/08) a little over 16 months and is running around all over the place and generally a very happy, very active fun-loving child. She is learning both English and Spanish (my wife is Hispanic if you can¿t tell that from her pics ¿ her maiden name is Barcelo as in Barcelona ¿ her family ancestry traces directly back to Spain), so she¿s saying a bunch of words in both languages, but not really speaking yet. Mostly she says the dog¿s name, Coco. For fun, I've been coaching youth football since 1994. It's great working with the kids and I've gotten to know a lot of people in the community. I was president of the program in 1999 and 2000, and I've held every coaching position for general assistant to head coach. I've coached every age from 6-14. It's very rewarding - especially when the kids you've coached come back later as adults and tell you that you had an impact on them - I totally understand why people go into teaching. I have a ton of respect for teachers - their job is 1000% more difficult than what i do as a coach.

Okay, I've never participated in TBT before, but I guess I'll jump onboard. From my 36th birthday ....
TBT - me in 2006 in Hermosa Beach. I think this might have been for my birthday, but I'm not sure - it looks kind of cold for April. Hmmmm ...
TBT - my friend Catherine Craig came out to visit me for Halloween in 2005.
Final TBT - my doggie, Coco in 2005. Other than a little gray around her muzzle, she looks exactly the same today.
