Doug's Story
Officially I am a '68 graduate of South Sioux City High--changed schools my sopomore year--but Central and friends from there mean a lot to me. At Central, I loved English classes (with Mrs. French); choir with Mr. Larson; and dramatics with Mr. Assink (sp? - who mysteriously disappeared in the middle of the year? Hmm...a scandal of some sort?) I remember being on stage in a very small part in "The Madwoman of Chaillot." Margaret Posey had the lead, I think? And Tom Peterson was the Prospector.
Now living in Minneapolis (since 1981) where I came to attend seminary, I am an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and work as a spiritual director associated with an organization called Sacred Ground Center for Spirituality. But prior to the call to mi...Expand for more
nistry, I had a homebuilding business in Sioux City (1973-78), and with my partner John Funke, built 14 houses in Sioux City's Indian Hills area. I got into a lot of trouble with drinking, and sobered up in 1977, and the course of my life changed radically--for the better. Through the recovery process, I experienced a spiritual awakening that lead me to ministry.
After getting an M.Div. degree from United Seminary in 1984, I worked for several years with a homeless shelter; and later took a position with a nonprofit in the Twin Cities--the Gay and Lesbian Community Action Council, where I worked for twelve years. I've been with my long-time partner, Stuart Holland, since 1991. We enjoy both attending, and occasionally performing in, music and theater events.
