Doug's Story

Life After Troy, I went to Cal State Long Beach and got a degree in creative writing. That baffled most job interviewers ("Uh, we don't have much call for short stories or sonnets here, kid"), but I eventually became a tech writer and editor and worked at Northrop, Hughes and a few other places. I decided to give Japan a try in 1981, and I've been here ever since. I taught English for a few years--a pretty typical gig for most foreigners not on expat packages--then got back into writing and editing and segued into the magazine business. ons director at the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan. I was there until the end of 2004, when I started a new business (see below). I met my wife, Taeko, in a recording booth--she was doing the Japanese narration for a language tape and I was doing the English. Our son Akira came along in 1989. We’ve been living in the same place (one floor above Taeko’s mom) on the west side of Tokyo ever since. New news--I left the ACCJ at the end of 2004 to start my own company, Fresh Eyes Communications. The first half of the year was slow, but business is picking up. On balance, I'm glad I made the move.
