Doug's Story
Life
I live in Des Moines and I am the Exec VP for Meredith Broadcasting (we own TV stations). Previously lived in Cleveland, Atlanta, New York City, and Atlanta again. I have been married 20 years and have two daughters, Catherine, 19, and Elizabeth, 16. I enjoy golf and running (in 1997, i ran the NY Marathon).
School
The biggest thing I got from school was learning how to pitch pennies in the endless hours of waiting before and after swim meets and practice.
It turns out the most important class I took was... typing.
College
I went to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland -- because that is where the Cleveland Browns played. It turned out ok. I got to go to most of their games, even as a poor student. Major school accomplishments:
1. graduating
2. drinking way too much
3. during the worst blizzard in 100 years (wind chill was -97), we made it to the corner store to get beer
4. played on winning intramural softball team that through 6 innings, had a perfect game going -- ruined in the 7th
5. made several donut runs at 4am
6. got thrown out of countless intramural water polo games for dunking people
7. sang 'paradise by the dashboard light' and 'only the good die young' 562 times each
8. learned the monday's spaghetti plus tuesdays chili could become wednesdays pasta special that can become '4 way chili' on thursday, and finish off the week as chili mac on friday.
9. learned the properties of gravity and mathematically equations -- practiced from 3rd story window with yogurt (involved limos)
10. realized that i wasted 18 years of getting up early for breakfast.
