Doug's Story

I've basically been gone from Monroe since '76, went to school after graduation at an all-male college in Indiana(Wabash) for a year and a half. They had a radio station, but no program to study broadcasting. I discovered that radio was what I wanted to do, and I found I really appreciated(and missed) having women around too. That was also where I picked up my nickname of The Bear which I have used professionally and personally ever since. So after quitting Wabash at the end of 75 I came home for much of 76 trying to find where life would take me(including a summer at Armco where I worked with Cliff Cassidy for some shifts). Got accepted into UC for the fall of 76 and became a broadcaster ready to take on the world after graduating in 79. Got my first big gig in Wheeling, WV and have been here ever since. Spent a year at a crazed FM station playing everything BUT the hits until we all got fired(a little thing about not making money, imagine that). Then spent several years working with a couple different regional bands(one rock, one bluegrass/country) as a sound and/or lighting guy. Played shows with Steppenwolf, Atlanta Rhythmn Section, McGuffey Lane and a bunch more, but never got the BIG break or the big money. Got married to my wife Lex in 1983, still am happy 30 years later. She pushed me back into radio in 84 and I got onto WOMP-FM and transformed into a h...Expand for more
oppin' boppin' TOP 40 DJ at a station which was one of the top 20 rated radio stations in the country 3 years running. A new boss brought in new people and I was out in 91 only to catch on at a station in Steubenville, OH playing adult top 40, then 9 years of country music. Got caught in a corporate downsize in 2004 and thought that might be it for radio, but after 2 weeks as a security guard at a casino my present employer called me asking if I was interested working their new format. So since Valentine's Day of 04 I've been playing the Classic Hits on 106.3 The River(WCDK-FM) in Weirton, WV. We basically play mid 60's to mid 80's rock hits(truly the music of OUR lives) and as I always tell people, "It beats the heck out of a REAL job". I've also had the oppurtunity to meet alot of musicians over the years including Grace Slick, Joe Walsh, Bryan Adams, Frank Zappa, Dan Fogelberg, ZZ Top and the list goes on. Lex and I never had kids but we love animals and currently share our home with a poodle, 2 shih tzus, and 6 kitties. I watch too much TV and was a big fan of Lost, 24 and Fringe, and still watch a bunch of reality shows, plus football(still a long-suffering Bengals fan, although it's getting better) and college basketball. Plus I'm real curious as to what happened to a bunch of my old classmates, where did life take you? Doug Marlin AKA Bear(see you on FB)
