Doug's Story

Life 25+ yrs. in 2000 characters? Here goes...Tried the college thing, but not having a real plan resulted in a loss of motivation, so I dropped out in '81. Explored my areas of interest. Lived and worked on Mt. Hood for a few years. Ski area lift op, Forest Service, Outdoor School staff. All seasonal, but all seasons, too. It was a fun way of life that taught me many life lessons and its how I met many of my closest friends. It was a dreamy way to live, but it was a financially challenging lifestyle. In 1983, I got back to my bedrock interest: music. I worked at Music Millennium for 8 years, and I started back into my musical studies. I learned guitar, banjo and I refined my drumming talents. I developed a wide taste in music. Over the next few years I was in 2 bands, did some writing and had a lot of fun, but, of course, found no commercial success. (Our dance moves sucked.) The last band broke up in '93, and I got myself a real job at a cabinet shop in Vancouver, Wa. I worked there from '93 - '02. I got my contractor's license in November 2002 and now I'm in business for myself. I contract with three different shops as an installer and do some small jobs of my own, too (mostly kitchen and bath remodels and custom woodworking for home offices and stuff). Pays good and I'm my own boss. Really dig the freedom. I met my wife, Joy, at the Dentist's office in '95. We were married in '97, up at Summit Meadows in the snow. We sold our home in Portland and moved to 4.7 acres outside Estacada in 2004. Joy has two kids from a previous marrage. Ian, 22, and Shannon, 25. Both are out on thier own now. We divorced on speaking terms this year (2009) and remain friends. I like to work on my tree farm and hike and camp. Photography still interests me. Get togethers with friends and family to jam and stuff are almost monthly occurances. The 20 year high school reunion was a blast, looking forward to the next. Life is good...Expand for more
! Peace Workplace Work work work. Thanks alot Mr. Steele! All those early morning before school and after school practices really instilled a tough work ethic in me. I enjoy working. Right after graduating CHS, I worked at Camp Arrowhead Girlscout Camp in Stevenson, WA. What a summer that was! Only about 8 men on staff, 40 women! I liked those odds. After that I spent a couple years at National Car Rental at PDX. I worked at the old Budget Tapes and Records in Gresham for about a year, then got a job at Outdoor School as a senior counselor. I worked at Camp Collins, Camp Adams, Camp Arrawanna and Camp Trestle Glenn. I learned to play the guitar during those years. I kinda got burned out on the camp scene and decided to get back to the music biz. I started working at Music Millennuim in 1984, and continued to learn more guitar and started back on the drumming thing. I spent 6 or 7 years there. During that time I also worked part-time at the Memorial Coliseum as an usher. Got to see alot of free concerts and alot of Blazer games. That was a good thing in those days! I was in a couple bands during my Millennium days. Both played 90% original tunes. I got to play drums, dobro guitar, and banjo. I really enjoyed it and miss being part of a team like that. The rehearsals were like being in Wind Ensemble abain. I finally got tired of being poor, so I went and got a 'real' job at a custom cabinet shop in Vancouver, Wa. I started at the bottom and worked my way up the shop for 7 years. In 2001 I got my license from the Oregon Construction Contractors Board and went into business for myself installing cabinets for other manufacturers and building/installing jobs of my own creation. I now have my own shop at home and I also contract with other companies installing their cabinets. I really like it, it pays excellent, and fortunatly for me, I'm good at it too! Work work work....speaking of which......gotta get to it! Peace, ~Doug
