CLASS OF 1970

Doug's Story

Hello All! How does one encapsulate post-graduation in 1970 when I last saw anyone--except for Toby, but that's another story altogether--to today? Not sure how to do this. Went to Annapolis,Maryland after graduating and worked, went to a local community college on my own dime, then discovered how to play the guitar really well and worked in bands on the east coast bewtween Washington, DC and Philly, New Jersey and environs. No, did not meet Springsteen back in the day, but we played in a few of the same clubs, tho. Mostly worked in boatyards to maintain that day-job to fund buying stuff and music equipment, etc. Nearly married at 21 to an amazing woman who was a elementary school and yoga teacher. Got cold feet. What an idiot! Moved to Seattle and joined my brother in running a vegetarian restaurant on Capital Hill in 1974. Lived like and as a hippie in a big collective/communal home across the street from Volunteer Park. Sold business to a former classmate at FWHS and her husband--who we all took art class from...strange, that!?! Brain-cramping on hers and his names just now, but it'll come to me in a moment... Maybe later, then. Moved to California after selling restaurant( California--which is where I transferred from during sophomore year as maybe some might recall...Or not). Joined a band doing studio work based out of San Luis Obispo(central coast, below Big Sur) and opened for Thinn Lizzie and almost for Heart on their first Canadian Tour, but our manager did a few too many lines of coke with the Thinn Lizzie crew to be coherent enough to get it done. Poof! Goodbye fame and fortune...Probably a blessing in disguise. Went into LA for a while till I couldnt take it anymore, then moved to Grants Pass, OR. with a woman I fell in live with to a hippie farm, no less. That ended and came back to Seattle in 1978. Lived and worked in the University district and Green Lake areas for about 9 years, getting nearly married to a woman who bore my son, Dylan. He's now 28. Very bright and cool young man whom I am very proud of. More on that later. Moved to Lopez Island, then Orcas for 4 years of Island time. Moved back to Northern Cal for 2 years of intense spiritual growth, then back here in 1993 and been here ever since in the Edmonds/L...Expand for more
ynnwood areas and now Gig Harbor. I married an amazing woman in 1996 and got a pre-made family of three girls and one boy, adding to my one biological son. 5 kids. Yikes. During my wild and wooly past I got into addictive substances--for 18 years. Got out of all that insanity in 1993 and have been blessed with 16 years of sobriety. Have worked in the recovery field, but mostly as a volunteer. Went back to school in 1995 to finish what I started in 1970. Recieved my BA from University of Washington-Bothell in 2000 in Education/Social Sciences. 1 class short of being a Chemical Dependency Professional( I WILL finish...) and am back in school in a Master In Teaching program through Western Governors University--the online university founded in 1996 by 19 western states' governors( Mike Lowry, for our fair state). Had my own business for 11 years started during the UW-Bothell days and then burned out on that and went to work for a national advertising firm which got its ass handed to it by the recession, and then they handed me mine, so I am in the process of getting another full-time job, at this writing. I have a part time job with a local school district as a substitute teacher--I know, I'm a masochist. I love this job. Can teach K-12, excluding any math or engineering related coursework which I do not have an affinity for, to say the least. Back to my son..He worked his way up in the carpentry fiels to supervisor, but is now changing careers and is in training to become a nurse. Very bright man. He married 5 years ago, and he and Alexis brought my first grand-daughter into the world. With ny wife Rebecca, I amn a step-grandpa to seven grandkids, who all call me gramps...such a deal. I love them all to the bursting point. Totally in love with all of 'em. Just had 2, 6 year old boys(cousins) and an 11 year old (sister to one of the boys) stay a week with us, and we wore each other out. Had a blast with them. My biological grand-daughter, Lydia, has yet to experience her step-cousins but she will soon. On the Toby front mentioned earlier...Ran into him in 1979 when I was working in a record shop in the University district. Brief but very entertaining interlude for us both, I think. Must go now. More will be revealed. Blessings to all.
