Douglas's Story
Life
At 18 I joined the San Diego County Marshal's Office and met my wife, Kim. We were both Marshal Cadets. Shortly after our 21st birthdays we were married and I became a San Diego Police Officer. Kim and I have 2 sons, both are now adults and our oldest is engaged to be married. I am currently on a leave of absence from the SDPD and serving in Afghanistan with the Dept of State. I am part of a team of US Police Officers that were recruited to train and mentor the Afghan National Police in the ways of democratic policing. My tour here will last one year and I'll be home soon.....back to beautiful San Diego. I'll see you all in July.
I returned home to my family March 2006. It felt so good to see my family and friends waiting for me at the airport! I continued my leave with SDPD and was reinstated in May. However, I ended up retiring from the Police Department and took a position...Expand for more
with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office as a Senior Investigator. I am now assigned to a State wide street gang task force.....right down my alley. In early April, Kim, the boys and myself were knocked out of bed after our home was struck by a bolt of lightening. It completely knocked out our entire electrical system and destroyed our plumbing! Good thing lighteneing strikes are covered on our home owners! After living in hotels for the past 7 months we are finally home. During the past 19 months I have managed to sleep in my house for a total of 20 days.......although I have to say the hotel (Marriott Residence Inn) was a bit more comfortable than my arrangements in Afghanistan. It's great being home with Kim! I missed her deeply. For those of you that made it to the 25th it was good to see you all again. Hope to see you all soon.....or at the very least at the 30th!
