Douglas's Story
Life
Life has been pretty good to me to quote a phrase from an old Joe Walsh tune.
After getting a bachlors in Accounting from Ohio State in 78, I moved to Michigan and have been living in the Ann Arbor area ever since. I worked for Price Waterhouse (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers) for four years and moved to the University of Michigan in 1982. I've been at UM ever since in several positions. Finished an MBA at Michigan in 1996. Did the evening program while working full-time. I'm currently the Chief Department Administrator for the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. I tell my friends I'm in rehab. Basically the job is working with the Department Chair to keep 50 faculty, Hospital Administration, and the Dean happy while keeping our bottom line above water. High stress, but it pays fairly well.
On the personal side, I was married to Janice Howard (a Michigan native) in 1981, some of you might recall meeting her at ou...Expand for more
r 10 year reunion. We had a son, Erik in 1984. In 1987 we divorced. I remarried in 1995 to Betsy Althouse. It was the second time around for both of us and it's been very challenging blending our families (not recommended for the faint of heart and sole). Ultimately, after being together 15 years the blending issues became too much to deal with. I'm now with a partner who's also 0 for 2 with no kids. We're committed to never do the marriage thing again. Almost four years and the relationship grows better every day.
For fun, I play softball in the summer, I work out every day running a few miles and lifting a little to relieve the stress of working at UM. I love to do projects around the house I built in 1992. Landscaping (some may recall that I went to OSU to be a landscape architect) and home improvements are my favorites. A never ending process I might add.
It's great to hear from friends of the past. Hope everyone is doing well.
