Douglas's Story
After 20 years working as a communications economist in various locations, I changed my life and became a social worker. As my spouse, David, runs a yoga school in Syracuse, we finally agreed after 10 years of commuting to settle in Syracuse. This is my first experience with suburban life -- I've always lived in apartments in big cities. So now I have a house, a car, and a tiny garden (it's a condo development -- no lawn, no snow plowing).
I am currently running a series of mental health clinics in Utica and Rome NY, teaching social work at Syracuse University, and hoping to start a private practice in Syracuse. The snows have started ...Expand for more
and the utter greyness of the snow belt has proven more startling than I thought. Happily, there's plenty of skiing and a smattering of cultural life. New York is a mere 4 hours away (but then again, so is Buffalo).
For those of you who remember my Mother, she is alive and kicking, albeit, not too high. She's 92 and keeps herself busy at an assisted living center in New Hyde Park. Her interest in biology has probably diminished to about zero. Unlike my childhood, there is not a fruit fly in site. Some of you may also remember my brother Art (now in NYC), Jeff (in Stony Brook and very happily retired), and Steve (strangely, in Minnesota).
