Douglas's Story

I was nerdy, shy, and standoffish during high school. I took everything personally. Only years later did I realize that most of us were struggling to find our way. I have reconnected with many of my classmates and have enjoyed the last three class reunions. I now do outreach for the class, helping to gather the contact information so we can invite people to the reunions. I live in Berkeley, California, with my wife, one of my sons, and a very mischievous cat. I worked as a teacher and careg...Expand for more
iver, and now I am very close to retired. I would love to hear from any classmates. We were lucky to grow up when we did, even though it didn't always feel that way. When talking to young people these days, sometimes I drop into the conversation, "Hey, I can remember the 1950s!" This is invariably greeted with a reverent kind of awe. Probably because I clearly am so old, but also because we did live during the "golden era"" of American culture, really. Or at least we'd like to think so :-)

This is my current "distinguished guest," a White-throated sparrow. It's not super rare, but one sees only a few of these each winter.
House sparrow.
This introduced species is gregarious and kind of pugnacious. The males are handsome, though.
Common crow.
The crows are actually very wary and come down to feed only occasionally.
Chestnut-backed chickadee.
These little guys move FAST!
This is a Bewick's wren, tiny and fussy. The photo was taken very early this morning in dim light, so it's a bit "noisy."
This White-crowned sparrow is molting from immature to adult plumage. The once-brownish head stripes are now becoming black.
Another dark-eyed junco, aka "the snowbird." I like these little critters.

This is the handsome male Cinnamon teal. The source of the first part of the name should be obvious
An "only in Marin" bridge at the junction of Nicasio Valley Road and Pt. Reyes-Petaluma Road.
This cute little bird is a Sora, a species of "crake." Normally they are furtive and are seen fleetingly as they slip through the marsh reeds. But we found this one feeding busily in a watery pool by the side of the quiet S
The famous pillow lava road cut near Nicasio Reservoir. These volcanic "pillows" were formed at the site of a rift at the locus of a mid-oceanic spreading center
