Douglas's Story
Life
I attended Defiance College in Defiance, OH and graduated with a BA in Languages in 1969. One week later I reported to Pensacola, FL to begin Aviation Officer Candidate School with the U.S. Navy.
I met Carla (at a match-making dinner) during my fleet training in the A-7 Corsair in Lemoore, CA and we were married in December, 1971. In April, 1972 I deployed aboard USS Midway (CVA-41) as part of Carrier Air Wing 5. We spent 10 months on Yankee Station in the Tonkin Gulf where I accumulated 185 combat missions and over 300 carrier landings. All told I spent 7.5 years in the Navy.
I left the service to attend Wharton Grad and received an MBA in Marketing in 1978. Since then I have held a number of marketing management and general management positions, the highlight of which was leading the financial turnaround of Vivitar Corporation, $125 million consumer electronics firm, in 1998. Most of my career has been involved with commercializing technologies in large companies (GE) down to pre-revenue start-ups, two of which went bust when the Âbubble burst in 2001. I have experienced many changes in my career, half voluntary, and half involuntary.

t, which I expected to be my final stop of my career, ended abruptly when the company, Rockwell Scientific, spun off our business unit. The new owner, a large Japanese company, invested for the technology to take to Japan and not for the marketing, sales and business development (me!). I elected to start a consulting practice to once and for all bid farewell to the B.S. of Corporate America and to put my experience to good use. Now, I run "an early release program for those who are imprisoned in their business", helping business owners identify and attack those issues slowing them down so they can spend more time working ON their business rather than IN it.
My mother passed away in 2009 at the age of 94, and my father passed away ten days shy of his 90th birthday in 2007. Older brother, David (NCHS Class of 63), hit it big when his company was purchased and is now retired in Atlanta, and younger brother Steve, (NCHS Class of 72) is retired and living in Marion, MA..
I wish you all good health, happiness and success in life, however you define that to be. Please stay in touch so I can find you for our next Class of '65 reunion to be held in New Canaan in September, 2024!
