Douglas's Story
College
After graduating from Sheldon, I attended the U of O. I continued to play trombone in concert, marching and pepbands. I joined the Army ROTC and as a junior, the varity swim team. I graduated in December 78 with a BS in Psychology and was commissioned as an Armor 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army. After 4 years of active duty, I returned to the U of O and did a 2nd BS in Biology and an MS in Biology. I then chose family over further studies.
Workplace
I am a reseach technician in the Dept. of Neurosurgery at the U of W. Most of what I do is biochemistry, although I also do some molecular biology and cell biolgy. We are trying to understand how brain tumor cells resist chemotherapy and if them mechanism or degree of resistance is significantly different from normal cells. I manage the lab and train and supervise our students, so it is interesting work that may have real benefits to people. I have also stayed active in the Army Reserve. I enjoy the challenges of the job and the soldiers I serve with.
Military

s at Ft. Ord. I went into the Oregon Army National Guard as a Company XO, and later was a Company Commander. I transfered to the Reserves and commanded two drill sargeant companies. I was with a Tranportation Terminal unit, then a Corps Support Group. I spent 5 months with Task Force Falcon in Guyana in 97. I was promoted to LTC in 1999 and was chief of Human Resources at the 70 RSC. I was the XO for 1st Brigade, 104th Div from April 02 to November 03 and took command of 2/414th Battalion (Drill Sargeants)in Renton WA on 2 Nov 03. In February, 2005, I completed the move of my battalion to Salt Lake City, Boise and Ft. Carson. I left command on 14 October. I was promoted to Colonel effective 16 April. I was then mobilized and sent to Iraq as the Senior Advisor to Taji National Depot. Camp Taji came under rocket or motar fire every few weeks, but none of the rounds landed near me.
I finished my tour in March, 2008 and brought all of my soldiers home safely. After 6 weeks to decompress, I went back to work at the University of Washington. Christine and I still do National Ski Patrol in the winter and manage a few trips for vacation during the year.
