Douglas's Story
The Short Version:
Took (another) year off after HS.
Realized I didn't want to earn minimum wage.
Still took several years to decide on becoming a special education teacher during which time I met Trish Hargett (speech pathologist) from Maryland, fell in love, got married 1985.
Lived in Maine for two years (cold and poor).
Moved to North Carolina (warm and poor). Got masters in Social Work at UNC (only basketball schools). Learned to hate DUKE. Became school social worker. Had a boy and girl (Campbell, 1991; Somers, 1993).
Moved back to B'ton in 1993 to work on doctorate in Special Education. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Finally fulfilled life-long dream of dropping out of school, ...Expand for more
1995.
1996, fled dissertation committee to Japan. Started working as a social worker for the US navy.
2005, returned to teaching with Department of Defense Dependent Schools (still in Japan)as a special education teacher, and currently (ironically) teaching middle school math/algebra.
I hardly get to Bloomington anymore, though my parents are still there (new home) when they're not traveling. We spend our summers in the Thousand Islands region of southern Ontario (just across the boarder from upstate NY). About the only time I'm in the US is in transit between Japan and our cottage in Canada.
We're far away, but easy to reach. If you're coming to Tokyo or upstate NY, give us a holler.
