Douglas's Story

I finished my underdraduate degree in Biochem/Computer science in '87. I then toured Europe on bicycle with my cousin for 6 weeks - which is the way to see Europe, you don't miss the little things that way. I then took a year off school and worked as a contractor (at McGill.) I started graduate studies (in Analytical Chemistry) in the Fall of '88. In December '87 I reconnected with Karen Heshka, who I had been lab partners with at John Abbott, and we started dating. We were married in June 1990. The highlight of my life was April '93 when my daughter Rachel was born - in the Royal Victoria, same as me, same as my dad. I started doing contract work as a chemist/software developer in about '93 (while at graduate school.) By '94 my research director told me it was time to finish up and get a real job ;-), so I left and got a job doing software at the national hockey league in Montreal. As you may know there was a strike that year, and I left at the end of the year. I moved to Nebraska in January '95 to start working for a scientific instrume...Expand for more
ntation company that needed a software developer who understood chemistry/biochemistry. I finally finished my Ph.D. in '96, to the great relief of my supervisor, who had probably given me up as a lost cause ;-) The name on the company doors has changed a couple of times since '95, but I work at the same company doing more or less the same thing more than 13 years later. We try to get back to Montreal to visit my family (and Toronto to visit Karen's family) every other year. You just can't get a decent bagel in Nebraska ;-) It took 5 long years, but we got green cards in 2000, so now we can stay if want. We finally bought a house in '03 and the best part is we're within a mile of a small lake with decent fishing (which Rachel loves) and a great biking trail (which I love.) The schools are very good (Rachel's not a big fan of school, but when she tries hard, she does well.) They even have 3 decent pick-up hockey leagues (which I'm getting too old to play in because they have no age restrictions and 19 year olds don't seem to get tired :-).
