Douglas's Story

Life My job history began in Siloam Springs where my brother, Butch, and I worked for our parents at the 4-C's Cafe and Motel, washing dishes and so on. I later worked for Foresgreen Construction building the highway bypass, driving a bulldozer and earthmover. After 3 1/2 years at the Univ. of Arkansas, I spent a year in Hawaii, first filing tax returns for H & R BLock, then Passenger Service for Pan American World Airways. In 1965 I returned to the Univ and completed my BSBA in accounting. Not particularly liking the accounting world, I took a position in Marketing with National Airlines and was assigned to Jacksonville, Florida. 3 years later I bought an interest in a travel agency, sold that to open my own agency, sold that, worked briefly for a large travel agency, and then in 1984, formed Coleman Travel Corporation and Coleman Ski Tours, a wholesale tour operator organizing ski tour packages for travel agencies and ski clubs nationwide. I sold my stock in 2004, and now manage our real estate properties in north Florida, and do substantial community benefit volunteer work. I have a son and daughter, and 3 grandchildren, all living in Jacksonville. Oh, you missed the superbowl here in 2006? Too bad, it was a great party. Life's pleasures: aside from family and friends which are most important, my two main interests are painting and sailing. I paint acrylic on canvas and have sold about 15 paintings so far; not making a living but am getting my ego massaged as the dollars come in. We have a Tayana Vancouver 42 sailboat which my wife and I sailed from Jacksonville to France in 1999. We store the boat for the winter and return each summer for an extended cruise. We have sailed to Ireland, England, the Channel Islands (guernsey), Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway where our boat is currently stored in a hanger in the village of Risor, about 100 miles west of Oslo. Our next grand adventure (we just returned from a spectacular trip to Antarctica last month) will be to sail back to Germany, truck our boat overland to Nurnberg, Germany, and motor down the Danube River through Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, the Black Sea, and on to Istanbul, Turkey. From there we will sail for several years in the Mediterranean and eventually sail back to Florida. By then I should be ready for a viking funeral (my own) where my remains are placed on my ship which is sailed to sea and burned. Just kidding, my wife wouldn't burn the boat. Jan 7, 2009, update. rduous journey from the Baltic Sea, overland to Kelheim, Germany, then 1500 miles down the Danube River to the Black Sea, on to the Bosphorus Strait to Istanbul, then through the Sea of Marmara to the Dardanelles Strait passing by ancient Troy and into the Aegean Sea and on to Western Turkey where our boat is currently hauled out and on land for the winter. We return in April to continue on to Greece. In my story above I seemed to have overlooked the role snow skiing has played in my life: I gave it a try in 1967, in North Carolina, liked it so much that with a friend founded the Jacksonville Ski Club in 1969. Follow this link: "skiclub.org/about.htm" What began as an avocation became my vocation, producing 80% of my travel company's income, while allowing me to ski just about every major ski resort in the world. At presentations I would truthfully say, "I have met most of my friends and all of my wives through skiing." The good news is that I did indeed meet my wife, Mary, on a ski trip; the bad news is that 9/11 just shattered the ski group travel business and I elected to sell my company to Snowtours in 2004. The company still operates using my name. Go to this link: "skitour.com" At the moment I am chairman of a group organizing the Riverside Arts Market in Jacksonville, Florida, which is modeled after the Portland Saturday market. Go to this link: "riversideartsmarket.com" Have just learned that a Siloam Springs native? is now a television news anchor on our local ABC Network station. Shannon Ogden is his name; I haven't met him yet but my daughter spoke with him and he said he knows Suellen McKinney Coleman and Misti Coleman. Small world. July, 2010, update. We have sailed the past two summers (5 months total) in the Aegean Sea, both Greece and Turkey. Our boat is currently "on the hard" at Kusadasi, Turkey, for the coming winter. We'll return in April, 2011. the Riverside Arts Market project is a big success with over 500,000 visitors in 2009. I am now Vice Chair of Riverside Avondale Preservation Inc, a neighborhood organization is to make this an amazing place to live...and we are! Mary and i will be in California camping in Yosimite, Sequoia, and King's Canyon National Parks in September/october; and in Hawaii for Christmas and New Years. Giving thought as to where to ski this winter as well as a possible trip for the grand kids. 2017 update. My primary focus for the past five years has been TEDxJacksonville. Take a look at the speaker videos; we are doing good things for our city.

Toilet on Japanese train; huge circular door so that it's wheelchair accessible; has heated toilet seat, bidet, washbasin, and is incredibly clean as are all public toilets that I've seen.

On days like this (with hotter ones ahead) I like to mentally remember voyaging to Antarctica. It's really more beautiful there than you have ever imagined.
Got a note from my friend, Elon Musk, today...
First he wrote, "A Man Called Ove", now this. Both wonderful; both imaginative; both wonderful emotional rides of heartbreak and joy.
