Richard's Story

Life I live in Auburn Washington, not far from Seattle. I am the outreach pastor of Victory Life Center. vlifecenter.org I have been married to Carmi since May 1994. I have a son (in the Marines, did two tours in Iraq, now in Japan.) from a previous marriage. Carmi and I meet indirectly because of ministries were involved in. It is very obvious that the Lord brought us together (even though we have our share of struggles at times). Before moving to Washington, I lived in Alaska for 18 years. Prior to that I lived in Oregon for a couple years. I was born and raised in Southern California. Christian Life In 1979 I accepted Jesus Christ in my life. Prior to that I was an atheist. I am very committed to my Lord. Over the years I have made many mistakes, lived with depression for years (even as a Christian), and been divorced more than once, but Jesus has been faithful to carry me through it all. Out of these experiences I have a passion to help people through their own struggles. Anyone that knows me from the past would know that God has done something in my life. I was going to be a police officer and just wanted to lock everyone up and throw the key away. Instead I have been doing jail/prison ministry for years, worked with the homeless, addicts, prostitutes, and the mentally ill. I have learned how to have compassion for the down and outers. (Don't get me wrong-I am not a softy or push over. I stand strong for holiness, purity, and morality. And I will confront sin. But at the time I have learned to have patience, share the love of God, and help individuals to make right choices.) I had a street ministry in the inner city of Seattle for around 5 years. Current Situation For several years I did web design and was a webmaster for a large client. Because of the recession, finances at the church have been much lower, so I have given up my church salary (even though I still am on staff at the church and do much ministry). Along with this responsibility, I may become a Program Director of a Discipleship Program. I am a visionary, look beyond my circumstances and trials, and believe God always has more for us than what we are experiencing in the present. I have a desire to create wealth to be able to help the Gospel of Jesus Christ to spread throughout the world. So, to continue bringing in an income I have started an Internet Marketing venture to capture some of the billions made on the Internet. creatingfutures.com School Favorite Teacher I suddenly have forgotten the name of my favorite teacher. He was my biology teacher. He was a real inspiration to me. I was a loner and he was a real encouragement. I idolized him. (And no he was not a pervert. It is so sad that things have gone the way they have in schools.) The last I heard years ago was that he is now a foot doctor in San Francisco. I was a loner so I only had a couple of friends in high school. The ones I reall...Expand for more
y remember were Richard Furlong, Colleen Dinsmore, and Liz Enriquez. I have to say that my memory is very poor, I had a bicycle accident just before graduation and my mother says I lost much of memory because of the accident. While at Sierra Vista I was actively involved in the Baldwin Park Police Explorers program. College I went to Mount SAC in Walnut and got an AA Degree in Police Science. I then went to Cal State LA and got a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice. I got both degrees in 3 years-obvious I was serious about Police Work. But I ultimately did not do anything with it. However, I was a volunteer police chaplain for a short time in Seattle. While at Mt. SAC I was very involved in the Republican Club and Student Government. I had a few girlfriends but to be honest, it was all about sex, not having a loving relationship. There were a couple of girls that I believe I made a big mistake in not developing a relationship with them. I just had the wrong mindset. While at Mt. SAC there were some Christians that would try to share the gospel with me. I wanted nothing to do with God. I seen myself as overall a moral person (amazing how we define this when we are in the midst of sin and don't know God). I was also a strong person who did not need any 'crutch'. I thought they were nice, but foolish to be Christians. I probably was not very nice to them. Well, here I am now an Outreach Pastor sharing the love of God with others. Workplace While going to college I worked at 7-Eleven and Safeway. After graduating from college I applied for a few police officer jobs and was close to being hired a couple of times. It was between me and another guy to be hired in the town of Brea. At the time it was a little town with a very progressive PD. It would have been a great job. In my last interview I blew it really bad. To this day it bothers me. I have to believe that in God's big plans I was not to get the job, but it honestly still bothers me at times. After that experience I got discouraged and decided I make more in the grocery industry anyways, so stayed in the grocery business for many years. I held several management positions, even opening up the first 7-Elevens in Alaska. I finally got tired of the grocery industry and with no experience at all got involved in the communications industry. I started selling and installing phone systems and security systems. Ultimately became the operations manager of the company. When I moved to the Seattle area several years ago I started working for a telecommunications company and doing a bunch of volunteering for a church. I ultimately came on staff with the church. I started also doing web design. When I left that church and started going to another church, I started doing web design full-time. At the same time I started a ministry in the inner city of Seattle. I am now the Outreach Pastor of Victory Life Center in Kent, WA.
