Duane's Story

Working as a pediatric pharmacist at McLane Children's Hospital at Baylor Scott & White in Temple, TX. Got married in '90 to a Baylor girl I met in '82. Had my 1st kiddo in '99. Talk about a life changer. Have 3 beautiful children - see new photos Still married after 26 years, and living in the same house - 24 years in Belton. So, Sept 05, went to Iraq as a Civil Affairs Officer. Huh? Spent 7 months in downtown Ramadi getting mortared and attacked about 3 times a week. God's hand was over us. All 180 of us returned home. 5 major injuries, but all recoverable. The details are begining to fade, but the memories are still vivid. Was in charge of Medical, Municipalities, and Sewage for all of Al Anbar. Spent more time working the sewage issue than any other items. The biggest surprise was being asked to care for the Governor of Al Anbar due to some chronic medical issues. No Naval Docs would come down from the FOB to check him out, so I was acting as a PA using my training as a pharmacist to provide medicinal recommendations to the MDs back at Camps Ramadi and Blue Diamond. It helped keep my head in the game for when I got back home. Aug 08, Went to Liberia to teach the newly formed Liberian Defence Forces about maintenance and logistics. It's amazing how much of the world is living under the gun. I thank God often for the freedom's that we have here in the U.S. Oct 08 Dad died of cancer. It was a 15 year battle for him. I don't get home much, and my contact with friends from school is close to zero. At the viewing, 2 of my closest friends from years gone by walked through the door - Lloyd Jensby, and Debbie Reinhart. I was pretending I was doing fine until they showed up. It was God's way of showing me he cared...Expand for more
about me. Thanks you two. Aug 09, was to go to Korea for a short tour, but was pulled from that detail and will most likely pick up command of the Company to which I am attached. 3/11 update I did pick up company command in Oct 09, and then was told in Dec it was being given to an up and coming Major. Talk about getting the wind knocked out of you. Just as that happened, I was asked if I'd be willing to go to Ghana for 2 weeks to do an assessment visit. Too many details, but it was incredible. I then escorted the Ghanaians up an down the east coast from NC to NY when they visited in June 2010. Thinking it was all over until I retired, I began to take my pack off. Nope. Got sent to Korea in a Colonel's billet for strategic logistics during an exercise. Got asked to come back for the March '11 exercise. Told them they'd have to take me off of the retired list. I retired 1 Jan 11. It was bitter-sweet. Bottom line, I told my wife I'd make it to 20yrs, and get out. My body has also told me it's time to hang-it-up Bought a beat-up 66 Mustang, and am rebuilding it with my son. I "think" I'll let him drive it when he goes to school. 8/16 - it's still waiting to be worked on after 6 years - now my son is just driving the old mini-van. Oh, he got it up to 100mph on I-35 and got caught. Fun times. The cop still laughs about how fast a MV was travelling. Not much else - just having to prepare for colleges and weddings. Talked with the kids about funeral arrangements the other day. It really upset them. Guess I didn't gauge that one correctly. I saw a lot of death in Iraq, and I've watched newborns, infants, children and adults die at the hospital. You never really know when or how it's going to come, but it's out there.
