Durward's Story
Life
After graduating from Circle High School, Towanda, KS in 1971, I attended Friends University in Wichita majoring in religion and philosophy. During my first year at Friends, while taking a church vocations class, I felt called to ministry as a vocation. I shared this sense of calling with my home church and on Feb. 13, 1972 I was licensed to the Gospel Ministry by Central Baptist Church, in rural Augusta, KS. I continued in college at Friends University and in July 1973, I met Karon Wolfe who had recently moved from eastern Colorado to the Augusta area. We were married on Dec. 29, 1973 at Central Baptist Church. After I completed college, Karon was in nursing school school at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. While she finished nursing training, I worked at Augusta Farm Supply.
In 1977, after Karon became and RN, we moved to Denver and I attended Denver Conservative Baptist Seminary. While there our first daughter, Erin was born, March 30, 1978. After graduating from Denver Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree, I was called to pastor, First Baptist Church, Devils Lake, North Dakota in April 1981. That November twin boys were born to us, Daniel and Andrew. Two years later another girl was born, Katherine.

October, 1987. I continue as their pastor up to the present time. After moving to Fargo, Karon has continued working part-time in nursing. Later, in November 1994, our fifth child, Michael was born.
These highlights do not do justice to all that the Lord Jesus has done in my life and our family. Our churches have not been very large (less than 100 in attendance), but I have seen God work in the lives of many wonderful people. Now into my 50s I see my children entering adult lives and God blessing them there. There are lots of challenges and lots of times that we wish were different, but even there, God has used disappointment, failure and setbacks to mold and grow us to be more like Jesus. That may be the greatest blessing of all.
Update on our children:
Erin is now married to Matt Torpey and lives in Denver. She teaches school there and is a new mother to Matt's son, Alex.
Dan is finishing Mechanical Engineering at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. He is also getting his pilot's license while there.
Andy just graduated from Wheaton College this sping and works in the correspondance office of the mayor of Chicago.
Katie is in her junior year at Northwestern College, St. Paul MN. She is an education major.
Michael started the 4th Grade this year in the same elementary school that his siblings went to in Fargo.
Karon and I are greatly blessed!
