Dustin's Story
Life
This isn't a complete bio, just an idea of what I was up to over the weekend.
I went to vernal this weekend to run lights for Mistress of Reality. I had never heard of them, but was told they are a Black Sabbath cover band. I was thinking dark so I grabbed the most saturated colors I had. I had 24 pars for my wash so I could have gone with a 6 color wash, but decided to go with a 3 color to get more coverage and angles. I also brought along 4 lekos for spots.
Now It's time to drive to Vernal. I left at 9:00 am Saturday morning and arrived at 12:15. The load in wasn't scheduled until 1:00 so I had time to grab a bite before hitting the club. I stopped in at the Lamp Lighter restaurant. a small hotel restaurant I had been to twice before. The food was mediocre, but there isn't much of a selection in Vernal so it would have to do the trick.
Club XS is a small club on the east end of town past a large pink dinosaur and just before an old water park called Wild Waters. Vernal is known as the Dinosaur Capital, which makes you think there would be a lot of archeology there. The water slide looked ancient. although older than many dinosaurs, I didn't observe any excavations proceeding.
Arriving at 1:00 pm I proceeded to unload and set up the lighting package Which took all of 2 hours. At 3:00 a white van arrive, what was inside was anything but white. An essence of the dark vixens filled the space as the Mistress of Reality off loaded their gear and began setting up drums and guitar amps. I finished focusing my lights as the ladies continued.I got a sence the night would be anything but rality as Mistress started their sound check.
The show didn't start until 10:00 pm, so I checked into my hotel room, showered, and went out for some dinner.About 9:00 I returned to XS and brought up a dim wash on t...Expand for more
he stage. A little blue and a bit of red for a deep magenta. A hot look, but dim, just to accent the feel for the evening to come. At 9:55 the DJ announced the arrival of Mistress of Reality.
Fog started rolling in from the back of the stage and spilling off the front into the room, filling it with the supernatural. The fog glowed magenta as I dimed the lights on stage for their entrance. Black. A banshee screeched through the room. The Mistress of Reality had arrived. A dark gloom filled the room as the stage wash came up. A deep congo blue was my choice for their entrance. The crowd was paralyzed by the Medusa's gaze that was their lead singer. Black hair, black pants, black shirt, black eyeshadow, black lips, she was not of this world. Then it got hard and fast. I threw in a chase to match the tempo. Ambers, reds, and blues, all mixed together pulsating around the stage. I pull up a special spot on the guitarist as she goes into a solo rif. Shafts or light reflect off the guitar and out through the fog into the screaming audience. The drummer went off at this point so I added some amber from the rear far off stage to create a sharp angle and accent key notes. The lead singer would hold her hand up in a Y as I created a V out of the amber lights behind her on the drummer. The song finished and stage faded to black.
I brought just the rear lights up on the drummer, guitar and base, creating this bloodbath silouett around the band. Again they broke out in some heavy Sabbath That would make your momys ears bleed. The stage lights chasing around the stage, building to an intense night. Mistress of Reality played for 2 hours and when they left the stage at midnight. What a classy vixen. I heard random conversations as I began to tear out the lights. "What an awesome show."
Time to head back to Salt Lake.
