Dwight's Story

Life Personal: Married May 15, 1993. Wife: Maria Rafaela (aka Magie). Two daughters: Rhiannon 16 and Rae Aiko 12. "Adopted": Jonah 16. Two Sudden Cardiac Arrests on February 2 & February 4, 2004. Some might say it wasn't a great week, but since I am writing this, I guess we could say the week ended well! Since then, I haved worked as a volunteer advocate for the American Heart Association and I have spoken on issues regarding education of Sudden Cardiac Death, heart disease, CPR, AED's, and AutoPulse. Professional: Writer, speaker, volunteer. School: High school looks much better in retrospect then it did in reality. College was a blast, especially 1st & 2nd years. Marine Corps was kind of fun, except for Boot Camp! Had lots of crushes wherever I went. A real big one on a girl named Lynn in high school. If I could do high school or my teens over again, I wouldn't! Having zits was bad enough, but even worse, all of the stupid mistakes I made! Still making them, but just not as many. If I did have to repeat my teen years or high school, I would have listened to my parents more and studied harder. Amazing what one learns after having teenagers of their own! College Loved college! I had a couple of roommates from Japan who were the biggest partiers I ever met in my life! They could barely speak English and I couldn't speak Japanese, but we always had a great time! Life revolved around getting beer into the dorms everyday and having as many girlfriends as we possibly could. The school was very international, so it gave me my first real exposure and experiences with people from other countries, their cultures, and their food. I also learned that young people from all nationalities are capable of having a great time together. I loved it! (Maybe the United Nations can learn something from college campuses.) Workplace: I have spent most of my career in sales & marketing in Silicon Valley, including several stints in management and as co-owner of several start-ups. I ha...Expand for more
ve always worked 14+ hour days, 6 to 7 days a week. This is kind of a Silicon Valley necessity to compete, keep your job, stay ahead, and make the mortgage. You work your butt off and ride the waves when the times are great, and work even harder and hunker down when the bad cycles hit, which they always seem to do every 7 to 10 years. I suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest on February 2, 2004, and another on February 6, 2004 and was considered clinically dead both times until I was resuscitated. After a very long recuperation, I realized that it was best thing that ever happened to me, though I do NOT want to do it again! My life is changed now with a totally different focus and a radically different set of priorites. I now do various types of volunteer work and I have worked as a volunteer advocate for the American Heart Association as a Survivor. Part of my advocacy work had me traveling to meet with Senators & Representatives on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC once a year. I have also taught CPR & AED, including information about emergency situations or signs regarding cardiac events. Along the way, I have become a writer & speaker. More importantly, my life now revolves around my daughters. Military: I served in the United States Marine Corps, something I am very proud of to this day! Boot camp was bad, no good memories there at all! Four months of little sleep, continual physical and verbal abuse, physical fitness training to an extreme, no time off, no women at all! Shortly after boot camp, I returned to college to work on my degree. I went to school every evening after work and studied till late at night. This kept me out of the local bars and out of trouble, so I moved up in rank & responsibility very quickly. I eventually became an assistant to the 1st FSSG, 1st Marine Division Disbursing Officer. I have traveled extensively around the world. My favorite stops were Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taipei, Shanghai, anywhere in Japan, Singapore, and Brazil.
