Dwight's Story

After leaving Cody I attended Wayne State for a year. Deciding that I was bored with school, I left Wayne and sought work. I ended up in the retail business where I progressed to a point where I was managing large discount stores in the Detroit area (Do you remember Yankee Stores?) I eventually took a job in Kalamazoo which later led to a position in a Meijer store there. Meijer promoted me to a buying position and moved us to Grand Rapids. We still live in that area in a small town named Rockford that is less than 20 minutes from downtown GR. I married Joan, a Chadsey High graduate in September, 1966. We are fortunate to have three children and nine grandchildren, all of whom live within 15 minutes of us. Two of the kids have chosen to live in Rockford as we do.. We often say we feel like we are living in the middle of a Norman Rockwell painting because of the small town atmosphere. This is enhanced by my community involvement and personally knowing the city leaders and many of the business community owners. I developed a good reputation in the retail business and was often recruited by other companies. I left Meijer after 10 years to follow other opportunities. Those led me to my last "...Expand for more
real job" which was as VP of Marketing for an international company in Cleveland. The plan was to finish my career there and then move back to Rockford. That plan was cut short by a serious heart attack in 1998. We decided to move back then to be closer to our family. Since the mid eighties I have also owned half of a sales and marketing business with a partner who did most of the work while I handled behind the scenes stuff like package design, preparing his sales presentations, etc. After we came back from Cleveland my partner bowed out of that business. I now own it myself and it provides a little bit of extra income with very little effort. I will keep it going as long as I am able it continues to make any sense. I am also keeping a little busy with a part time position as Director of our local museum which recently moved to a new facility and expanded. Most of my close family members including my brother in Westland have died. Consequently I get to Detroit much less often than I used to. My life is now one as a West Michigan resident, and specifically as a Rockford resident. I am dealing with some health issues, but who isn't? Life is good. ' I hope you can all say the same.
