ED's Story

It began when I was stationed at Ft. Benning, GA, in the fall of 1964. On a pass, I crossed the Chattahoochee River into Phoenix City, Alabama. Never before had I seen, nor had I, in my naivete, imagined "whites only" and "coloreds" distinctions for eateries, for movie theaters, for drinking fountains, for restrooms. Never before had I felt such a deep sense of shame; shame for some of the attitudes and remarks I recalled carelessly tossing about in gym class, on the ball field, in the high school halls. Upon enlisting in the Army immediately following graduation I found myself serving with, working with, eating with and bunking next to, and going on perilous patrols with young men whose skin tones had precluded them from any part of life in Allen Park and the extraordinary advantages every Allen Park Jaguar enjoyed but had never done anything to earn. I felt the shame go to the quick,. That was then. And from that nexus I moved forward. In 1974 I graduated from Cal State, Hayward. For my military service I received financial assistance. From the Golden State I received the college education, 100 percent tuition free. I also went on to San Jose State for an MBA. In 1978 I opened up my own business, E. Tubbs & Associates. an "average" work week should consist of 80 hours. What I'm auguring to is a simple truth far too many are far too pleased to deny: I worked my ass off, I made a decent living, paid a lot in taxes . . . and was, as I am today, so lucky to have secured the education, to have been able to go into business for myself, and especially to have been able to pay the ton of taxes I did. LUCK. That played such an incredible role in everything I became and in all I ever had. The kids in Detroit's inner city had not an ounce of the great fortune that fell into my lap gratis, and without ever a moment having deserved it. Today, although I'm also a subscriber to Medicare, I receive my health care free, from the VA; exams, tests, pharmaceuticals, whatever medical procedures may come to be medically efficacious . . . FREE! I do not regard the fact of my military service should be what entitles me to adequate healthcare. Similar to my tuition-free college education, everyone has -- or should have -- those rights. To any and all who would disagree with me, to all who regard themselves as conservatives or Republicans . . . please . . . I've no desire to acquaint or reacquaint you. I do not want to know you, or have any further thoughts of you. Please respect that.
