ERIC's Story
You may remember that during our senior year we were asked "What are you going to do after graduation". I said that I was going to work on helicopters in the ARMY. Figured I was going to be drafted anyway. I did that for eight years. Including Vietnam, 16 months in Germany, and three years in Ft Hood Texas. I then joined the Air Force Reserve Rescue unit at Portland airport and did that for five more years. Summer active duty trips to Vegas every year for two weeks, Mt St Helens, the first Shuttle launch, and the 1980 Winter Olympics were some of our more notable duties. Very meaningful work, if you can find it. During the economic slowdown in the early 80's I went back on active duty, with the Air Force. Spent ten years in California, with many trips to other states and Japan. Then got transferred to Okinawa for 2 years. Beautiful country. Worked in Special Operations for 2 yea...Expand for more
rs there. Many trips in South Pacific area. Then got sent to South Dakota for my last 2 years. Assigned to a B-1 bomber Squadron there and hated it. People were OK, but the weather sucked. Too hot and dry in the summer and too cold and dry in the winter. Retired after 26 years in the military. Then tried college at Mt Hood Community. Got an Associates in auto technology and worked as an auto tech for another nineteen years. Mostly enjoyed it, but at 65, and with a minor back injury I figured to finish it when Tonkin Dodge bought The dealership I was at. Too many trucks. With slightly reduced lifting capabilities I figured they probably wouldn't keep me around. I was the "oldest tech in the shop" and limited in what I could lift, so I retired. Never sat around this much before. Always been too busy. Now finding out what I like doing. In progress. May go back to Guam for a visit.
