Ed's Story

Life CHAPTER 1: LIFE (as I know it). . . I need just a little more time, I can't find my Life Report right now... but it's nearly finished, honest! Until then, "send me a card or a letter" (hmm, Beatles?), rattle my cage, shake my tree... I'll write you an essay! Just kiddding, but I really would like to hear from ANYONE out there. (Except for ****** **************!) School CHAPTER 2: SCHOOL. . . Give me a little while for this assignment, ok? I'm still trying to recall stuff from that era. Some things are really clear and special and I can put myself there as if it were yesterday, although that may only be the onset of early dementia. But other events or memories aren't so clear. . . perhaps a psychological block for my benefit. I'll get back to you about it. College CHAPTER 3: COLLEGE. . . I took classes of interest at the ol' Chicago Circle Campus from '71 until '74, while working as a medical technologist at the old U of I Hospital up Taylor St on Wood St, moving to the newly-built hospital across the street in '79. I was promoted to Technical Director of the Blood Bank and Transfusion Services; became involved with teaching and research, so I had plenty to study and occupy my time without undergraduate studies. (However, that came back to haunt me some years later!) Recommended for a faculty position by the Dean of Associated Medical Sciences and supported by written recommendations by...Expand for more
two other staff professors, I was turned down at the vice-chancellor's office... soley due to my lack of 'pedigree'. I received a very nice 2-page letter of disappointment/ 'apology' from the professor who'd originally recommended me, suggesting that the wrong person was in that office at the wrong time. Perhaps next year... Oh well... live and learn. I resigned shortly after that and moved to Tulsa, OK for bigger bucks, having been denied recognition for 11 years of dedication to my profession (as a 'mongrel'). So children, do your best in school and study hard... it WILL pay off Workplace CHAPTER 4: WORKPLACE(S). . . I've worked at numerous jobs, since leaving the field of medical technology, research and administration in '82. Most of them not worthy of mention, in my mind (so I won't)-- PTSD, depression and associated emotional disorders had crept up on me and worsened over the years since Vietnam... but therapy & meds have restored me to 'normal' and I'm quite happy today working with computer hardware and doing whatever IT takes to keep the data flowing, stored and backed up. Military CHAPTER 5: MILITARY. . . 01/66 until 01/70, working mostly in hospital medical laboratories in the Air Force-- stateside and overseas. I don't talk about it much... and that's really about all I have to say about that period of my life. Name, rank, serial number; I did what I was told... most of the time.
