Ed's Story

After attending 3 different high schools: Lake Stevens, Garfield (Seattle), and Lincoln (Seattle), I attended the University of Washington from 1970 - 74, getting a degree in aeronautical engineering (actually, it was mostly computers). I then went into the Air Force as a pilot from shortly after graduation until fall of 1980. I was a flight examiner flying WC-135's when I left the Air Force. This means that I decided if other pilots were trained enough to act as crew members without further instruction. After the Air Force, I worked at several engineering and computer jobs: Aerojet Strategic Propulsion in Sacramento, as a consultant for Boeing in Seattle, and then as a software engineer at Aldus in Seattle, Egghead in Issaquah, and finally Microsoft in Bellevue. After 21 years in a cubicle, I finally escaped and became a flight instructor down at Boeing Field in Seattle. This is the job that I'd always wanted since I was 16 and first soloed (flew by myself) in an airplane. I've been a flight instructor at Boeing Field now since 2004 and feel it's re...Expand for more
ally more of a dream fullfilment position, since most of my students have been middle-aged and "have always dreamed of learning to fly, but are only now in a position to actually do it." To say that it's personally very rewarding would be a real understatement. While the pay is iffy and the hours random, I'm finally able to do what I've always wanted! Did I mention that it's wonderful? In addition to teaching, I've also started doing Angel Flights which are flights that take seriously ill patients, who have to travel a long distance to get to treatment, to/from home to treatment in order to make it easier, or even possible in some cases, to simply get the treatment they need. For example, a typical flight might be Seattle to Eugene or Renton to Spokane. In one case (a burn victim), she'd been traveling from Ellensburg to Seattle by bus for weekly treatments until she discovered Angel Flight. About 8-10 hours of bus travel round-trip turned into 2 hours of flying, also round trip. Take a look at "Angel Flight West" in Google to see what it's all about.
