Ed's Story

Life Currently: Director of Customer Development, Fisher Plaza, Seattle WA - Former: Lt. Col, USMC; MOI, U of WA; Westin Building Manager for 10 years. Interests: Family, Telecommunications and Media TV, Radio and Internet, Commercial & Residential Real Estate. We live in West Seattle where we look out over Elliott Bay and the city we love. We are active supporters of the Navy ROTC unit at the U. of WA. We spend as much time as we can with our Children and Grandsons. Lorraine started a Family Workday where one Saturday every other month our extended family of 15 adults, plus children, get together and work on one of our family's homes. You would be amazed at how much work gets done in one day. I haven't had the urge to go back east, except to visit family. It has been interesting reading up on what has become of my classmates. I only wish we had the time to be more involved. The world never seems to slow down, only gets faster. I am a terrible correspondent, even by email, so please don't be crushed if I don't write back soon. My family has all but given up on me, if that gives you an idea. Semper Fidelis, Ed School I started at Levittown High as an 89'er in 1960 and graduated in 65. I have some great memories of being able to walk, or run to school. High on my list are Pat Kuhn, managing the football team and being its student trainer, Coach and Biology Teacher Chuck Foltz (who taught me a lot about sticking with something), running the 880 behind Ed Zinovitch, Bill McGrath, a great teacher and friend to us all who I see everytime I get back there, Sally Freeman, my 8th grade homeroom and English teacher who taught me what a carasibidge was, and how a great looking teacher inspires young lads to study, Mr. Malony, another great English teacher who introduced me to Joanne Benson, his student teacher in my senior year (great crush fulfilled and crushed), the whole football coaching staff, Mr. Lutterell, Griffenberg, Joe O'Donnell (who threw me so many passes at practice I wanted to get into a game), Dennis Reiter, Mr. Devers. Nancy Cella, one of our cheerleaders and her family. Miss Kelly our Civic teacher in the 1960 Kennedy election. I remember being in the training room getting ready for football practice when the PA system came on with the Kennedy shooting story. I remember getting one single point in the 880 at a meet in Burlington when Coach Foltz took the rest of our 880 team out of the race so I could place 3rd. I remember collapsing after crossing the finish line, totally exhausted the way every race should end in life. That race got me through 20 years of the Marine Corps including being shot at and hit. I remember being mad as can be (I still am) when they changed the name of the school after the town fathers changed the name back to Willingboro. I never got a class ring because of that. As much as I loved Jack Kennedy, it didn't make sense to erase those years of Levittown High. Despite that one bad memory, it was a great High School education and a great time. College After graduating from Kennedy in '65, I lasted an entire semester at Rutgers before being put on probation for failing Calculus and French. So much for becoming a Doctor, which had been my goal since I was the student trainer on the Kennedy Football team. I went to night school at Rider College for a quarter and got a B in History to prove I really could study. Then came a notice to take my draft physical and I beat that by enlisting in the Marines. The Marine Corps helped put me through the U of Md. night school for several years while at Ft. Meade, Md. and then later sent me to the Univ. of Washington where I finally graduated in 1977. I later took some grad school classes at UW while teaching in the ...Expand for more
NROTC unit from 80-83, but cared too much about teaching and advising students to focus on getting a graduate degree. I still stay active in the NROTC Blue and Gold Foundation, raising money to make up for the shortfalls in the Military budget. Write me if you want to help. MOS's: 6511, 0302, 0402 Vietnam Dates: 12/68 to 07/70 Boot Camp: MCRD Parris Island Grad: Oct 66 Platoon: 2074 Vietnam service with: D/1/1 for 21 days, wounded & Evaced to Guam, Returned to Division G-3 then, 3rd Bn, 1st Mar, 1st Marine Division, Kilo Co, 1st, 2nd, & 3rd plt. Co CO & XO. Extended for 6 months with Tango Security, 1st MAW Hundreds of memories. Plt Cdr, Co Cdr & XO during 69. Originally went in-country to D/1/1 in December 68. Missed Bob Hope show and lasted for 21 days. I was wounded during a Co. size Opn into Dodge City where Meade River had been run & evaced to Guam. Returned to Danang after a month & worked in 1st Div COC as a watch officer. Joined 3/1 from the Div. CP after No Name Island. SSgt Rodreguiz was our Plt Sgt. Capt Tom ("Be flexible & keep your sense of humor.") Hobbs was the CO. Had all 3 plts at one time or another, then CO after Tom left. Dropped back to XO when a Capt Bihler (I have a picture of him somewhere sitting on the LZ with a K-bar in his teeth) arrived. My cousin, Bill Merrill, was in Chuck Courser's plt. in India co. and was killed right before Thanksgiving. I left early and went home on extention leave for his funeral and then returned to the 1st MAW HQ as Tango Security Officer for 6 more months. Left country in July of 1970. A young man from Iowa, Cpl Hoesing was my Radio Operator. Pappy was our mail man. Rick Mahony was the FAC, Lt Gregory was our FO. JC Martin was one of the Plt Radio Operators. Those names and memories are buried really deep and need some prodding to get them all out. I keep saying I am going to write a book....someday....anyone interested in a group effort? I started out enlisted at PISC in 66. Became a bomb humper in the 2ndMAW. Made sgt. and got selected for OCS. Went straight from TBS to VN, after leave, with a whole plane load (707) of 2nd Lts, 1-1stLT, and 1 Capt. I stayed in the Corps and retired in Seattle WA in 1987. Working almost as hard now as VN, but not getting shot at now. I still keep a helmet and flac jacket at my desk as a reminder of how tough things were then, and how it really isn't that tough now. Looking forward to having the time to slow down and do more of this before we all get as old as my Dad (a WWII vet who died with cancer and alsheimers in Feb 2003) who couldn't remember anything or any one when he died. Would love to hear from those who walked the same trails and listened for the same mail calls. Semper Fi, Ed Served with Kilo Co 3/1 from 12/68 to 07/70 to 1st, 2nd, & 3rd plt, CO & XO.
