Ed's Story
After I left Bowsher, I went to college. I studied computer programming. After I started my first job, I was drafted into the Army. After three years in Germany(at least I was in IT). One of my many benefits was that I could travel to almost all of Europe(excluding Communist countries) by car. I had an absolute dream job and real civilians (US) as bosses. I had broad responsibilities while I worked. I worked as a super debugger of other people's code. I could halt the production of two Main Frame computers, Which were responsible for the movement of all ARMY Supplies in Europe(some were classified, and most weren't.).
One of the interesting perks of the job and it helped me later in my profession. I was able to argue with full bird colonels, and in doing so, I was able to teach them about super technical items in the operating system and make them u...Expand for more
nderstand just enough to prove the point that I was talking about. It helped me handle know-it-all bosses, and I usually made them understand that the OS (IBM's version was constantly being updated and tested before it showed up in the Army.)
I returned to a real-life, worked in programming for a year, and went directly to Systems Programming, where I stayed for the next 35 years. During that time, I attended many IBM classes (all over the US) and some even here in Chicago. During that 35 years, I also taught about 19 courses on IBM products. I loved my job, even though it was demanding (many, many 100-hour work weeks). I had a severe injury, had to go on Long Term Disability, and finally retired. I am reasonably happy, but my illness keeps me from working even part-time. I live in Chicago and can no longer travel unless I have friends accompanying me.
