Ed's Story

Some of you may remember Manchester High School's first hippie. :-) At the time, I was truly a child of the 60s. I have to wonder what I would have been voted most likely to <fill in the blank>. Life changes and now, I manage an engineering department for ARRL, the National Association of Amateur Radio. My work takes me all around the country, working with various government agencies and industry to help resolve radio interference problems. A google search of (Ed Hare W1RFI) will show a lot of what I am up to lately. But that era was an exciting time for all of us, each in our own way, and the culture of the 60s is part of all of us to this day. Who can forget the legends such as Hendrix, or the whole idea that people can and should love each other at all times, in all ways. As the echoes of that time live on in us all in the 21st century, we can still realize now how that time shaped all of us in ways that, for most of us, have added value to our lives. So from the days of "purple haze" have come inner growth. I still live my life in a way focused on my own spirituality and the joy of relationships with others. Far from the shy boy some may remember, I have learned to be outgoing and connect strongly with most people I meet. igh school kids not really knowing what to do with the grown-up feelings within us. I hope that for all of you, that growth and the sheer joy of living have never stopped. If you can, take a trip back to hometown Manchester some day. It has changed a lot in some areas, but others are exactly the same. Downtown could be the same place as it was in 1969. The tobacco fields in the north are all one giant mall now, but my old home on Tolland Tpke is still there, as is my earlier home near Union Pond. The feeling of again being connected to those wild days of your youth will be awesome and you will remember parts of yourself that you may have forgotten. If you can't get back, go back in a journey of the mind and connect yourself emotionally with people you loved then, and the uncertain way you felt about your own life and what you could do with it. You will be glad you did, and connecting all of your life together will change you. Remember that ALL of our life has vailidity and importance, so the days from our earliest memories to the last day we will be here on earth (this time) are all precious, and we need each minute... and each other. My personal interests are, of course, Amateur Radio (ham radio) and technology. But a day of quiet solitude on a lake in the woods, wondering whether a fish will come along any time soon is also precious. Ed Hare, class of 1969, then 1969 then the School of Hard Knocks
