Ed's Story

Hi Everyone:: After High School, I joined the Army Security Agency (military wing to the NSA) for four years. During my tour of duty in Vietnam, I was in charge of running the war room for the 25th Infantry Division. This included calling in air strikes, artillary strikes, or any other military action that might be needed to both protect our troops and negatively impact the enemy.. Once I left the ASA in June 1969, I started my educational pursuits. I obtained a degree in Finance from LIU ( CW Post Campus) in 1972, and used the degree to perform corporate trust work down on Wall St. I later moved to Salt Lake City in late 1973 to work in the Finace Divsion of Utah Power and LIght. Unfortunately the oil crisis of 1973 forced a freeze on hiring and my job went away. After spending nearlly a year in Salt Lake and enjoying the fantastic skiing but no work, I moved to Denver where I worked in a ski shop repairing and preparing skis and other equipment for individuals and groups. This experience led me to participate in the Denver Metro Ski Races at Vail one year while waiting to earn my Colorado residence. Once, I had my residence, I started taking advanced accounting courses at Colorado University - Denver Branch. By the time I completed all my courses in 1977, my wife, who was a Lupus patient, could no longer work. Because of this and my responsibility for both my wife and my infant son, we moved back to the Island and stayed with my Dad. During this time, I was accepted to Grumman Data Systems school for an IT certification. After completing the course material, I was immediately hired by AIG. Yes, the same firm that has been in the news since the financial meltdown. I stayed with the insurance giant until December 1980. During my time at AIG I helped customize a new G/L System and directly assisted the controllers of AIG's insurance companies in establishing their respective chart of accounts. Because of my work in the IT Department, I was offered a position as an IT Auditor and relocate to Manchester, NH July 1979. By the end of 1980, I was offered an IT Auditor Supervisory position with First City Bancorp in Houston, TX . Thus I moved my yound famiy to Houston, TX. from New Hampshire. As the new IT Audit Supervisor at First City Bancorporatiion, I converted all previous audit software to Informatics Mark IV and establishednew procedures for handling query, created a library of application record layouts / special codes, as well as audit request and reporting procedures for both the IT and Financial auditors the software tools for them to qurey their needs. After the oil bust in the early 80's, I eventually found myself working for Occidental Petroleum in an IT Auditor capaccity by 1984. Working for Occidental was like catching a flying bus every Monday morniing and return on Friday evening. I was in the air every week. This travel also included both domestic and foreign trips too. While at Occidental, I wrote analytical software that lead to a $1.5 million dollar find to reduce wasteful IT operating and processing costs. In Scotland, I helped to identify the weaknesses of an IMS database system for controlling and managing offshore drilling equipment. Had to leave Occidental, because they wanted to relocate me to Los Angeles with the housing market in Houston in the tank and unable to sell the home in a reasonable time frame. By July 1984, I moved over to Texaco where my air travel was significantly reduced and I had some assemblance of a normal home life. At Texaco I developed number of cost saving software for both IT and Financial Auditors. Later in 1989, executive management gave me the opportunity to develop and install a global audit system along with email notifications to management when a questionable or illagal access is picked up by thge system. The interfacing of email with a complex system like mine was quite advanced at the time. It allowed as well as controlled ...Expand for more
the financial and joint venture auditors access to execute only those programs, that they were authorized to use for specific audit reviews. After a national layoff in late 1993, I did consulting for part of year before leaving for Phoeinx, AZ. In Phoenix, I did more consulting such as for American Express. At AmEx, I taught their programmers to insert DB2 code into a production software programs no matter what type of COBOL version was being used.. Also wrote software so that IT project managers would know exactly how the project is doing and if personnel on the project not meeting their respective goals. In one case, the project manager learned through my system that a given system process had stabilized. In addition, this manager learned that his project had been over charged by $354,000, and that he needed to have his own Tape management System and tape storage facility. In 1998, I was given a unique chance to attend SAP training in Waltham, MA and learn their progrramming language ABAP/3. Following my ABAP/3 training, I was hired to PeopleSoft and attended their Boot Camp in Pleasanton, CA. After an unplanned layoff of 400 people by PeopleSoft of which I was one, I started the joob search again. My Job search lead to me to OCWEN Financial Corporation and hired in June 1999 as their IT Audit Manager, and relocated to West Palm Beach, Florida. In addition, senior management had me take over the role of the Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Project Coordinator along with my Audit duties. From 2004 to 2008, I was specializing in Sarbanes-Oxley Audit review with some consulting firms.. At MGT Intel Group, a Pompano Beach based consulting, I was given the title of VP of IT and Audit Services. With the down turn in the economy andour client base drying up, I quite MGT Intel and relocated back to Arizona after having laser surgery on my urinary tract on Dec 1, 2008. The surgery was designed to unblock my radiated and cancer damaged prostate. In late 2007, I had under gone '23' days of radiation therapy and then two High Dosage Radioaction Seeding surgical procedures. The end result was that the the treatment killed the cancer, but unfortunately destroyed my urinary system and lower bladder. Since moving back to Phoenix in December 2008, I've been put on 100% disability from both the VA and Social Security. The VA determined that my prostate cancer, my type II Diabetes, and my hormonal damage were tied directly to "Agent Orange". Since 2007, I have under gone '18' surgeries, which also included a number of joint replacements and internal fixes here in Phoenix. At this time I am being rehabilitated from having my right wrist and forearm fused together. This was my 4th surgery on my wrist and the 18th over all. I'm recouping in the Arizona State Veterans Home. Also, the surgery shocked my system so that I am now a Type 1 Diabetic. Further, I've been suffering with nocturnal seizures in my sleep. Early in my recovery, I was awoken and found myself smashing my surgical right forearm into the hospital bed railing. These seizures have been with me since 2009. Agent Orange is the suggested culprit. My brain scan last year showed that I have a chronic number of TIAs in my brain. These TIA's maybe a direct cause for my seizures, but my Neurologist is not sure. Over the last '15' years I have moved between Arizona and Florida '3' times because of work. The last return to Arizona has forced me into early retirement. I married my 2nd wife, Lillian, on Winter Soltace of 2000. She has been a very good wife to me. Our home is in Avondale (just West of downtown Phoenix). The home is a great home and in a lovely sub-division. The pool at the house has helped me with my many surgical rehabs. It really came in handy when I had the ball joints of my feet replaced along with both of my knees. Feel free to call me at 561-951-7686. Thanks for the memories, - Ed
