Edgar(Buz)'s Story

My story is really a tale of two people. One is the person everyone wanted me to be. And the other is me. After high school I got a job as a "ships carpenter" at Merrill Stevens in Miami. Worked there for a few years while living on my sailboat at Dinner Key marina. Having way too much fun! Remember how the late 60's were like? They would put you in jail today for half the things you got by with back in the day. Well then it happened; strong pressure from the folks to go to college and make something of your self. I thought I was already doing that. So off I go to Fla State Univ. on a football scholarship ( not-just kidding).I had to get student loans to pay for the dam thing. You'd think parents would help if they thought it was so important to be "educated". I got my BS in math and physics and everyone was happy; well almost everyone. Ever try to find a job with a BS in physics? Its amazing how well you can perform at a fastfood place with a college degree! Well, back to FSU for the MBA. Dad says you will make a great accountant since you "know math". After another two years (it should have taken only a year but you need to remember that FSU was still mostly girls back then and it took a while to meet them all),and MBA in hand I landed what my dad called a "really good job" working as a CPA for a national accounting firm. That worked out ok until the firm decided I was a little too creative to be an accountant and suggested I leave for bigger and better things. I think I already had those things back at Dinner Key. Can anyone say "going backwards"? Well my dad never short on advice suggested I go back to school and become a lawyer. Mom agreed. But she always agreed with dad. Soon I'm off to the Univ. of Arkan...Expand for more
sas law school.I have to admit I really did enjoy the education. And I know it sounds crazy but Arkansas was in fact a party school to die for. It was amazing. At least what I can remember of it. After graduation my folks were so proud of me they cashed in their saving bonds and gave me $25,000 to go buy a house and settle down to a great life as a lawyer. Doesn't that sound like a plan. Well here is where the story takes a turn. You see ever since grade school I had spent my free time drawing and painting ; you know like an artist. My folks never took me seriously when I would say;" would it be great if I became an artist? My dad said artists are either bums or trust fund babies. Well I wasn't a trust baby but I did have $25,000 or most of it after I bought 25 cases of french wine. It's what artists drink you know. So I got my passport and a one-way airline ticket to Brazil and left to paint seascapes, cities and nudes. After about a year I was running low on money ( didn't sell any paintings and you know the food was very expensive in south america)so I returned home to a rather cold welcome. I was glad to be home but I was really focued on my future as an artist. Well to make an already long story short, over the next several years I did practice law and I did help a few thousand clients file bankruptcy and discharge several million in credit card debt.I guess I did something good to better the "human condition" of many down and out americans. And if the gate-keeper to heaven is a democrate I might make it in. Today I'm a painter and I show my art at my gallery in Denver, Colorado. I have been doing this for over twenty years. I'm the person that I wanted to be. And my folks god bless them; might still be proud.
