Edie's Story
After high school, I headed to Baltimore to Towson State College. I worked full time while going to school because I so brilliantly declared my independence; my parents being the supportive folks they were honored that decision by having me pay the rest of my tuition--great lesson; I should have thought that one through.
I was lucky to land a teaching job in the Baltimore City Public School system, which in spite of what everyone hears, the kids are truly wonderful. So many are needy and live in situations that are unfortunate. During my years there, I taught English grades 6 through 12 and one year taught Social Studies because of my social sciences background.
I needed to begin working on a Master's Degree and was encouraged by a good friend to consider a degree in Guidance and Counseling. I took the advice, applied to Johns Hopkins where I earned a Masters Degree and Certificate of Advanced Studies. Both are in Counseling: Guidance & Counseling and Counseling.
No Guidance jobs were available in BCPS. In 1984, one of my instructors suggested I come to...Expand for more
the Anne Arundel County Public School System. I did and have been since. I enjoyed 10 years a s guidance counselor and in 1994 went into administration working as an Assistant Principal. I have a great job, working with great kids, and a supportive community.
I still ice skate for recreation from time to time, took up golf, and bicycling (love my new bike). I have a pension for flying kites (my dad got me into that as a kid), and have become an avid gardener. I like reading, going to the movies, the symphony, and cooking, especially on the grill. Still a staunch Redskins fan (RGIII...Yeah!), and now a Washington Nationals fan (glad DC has baseball again. I remember going to Senators games--that's dated). I also like the Orioles who have been a fantastic substitute during the loss of DC baseball. I support the Ravens as my second team--living in Baltimore you kind of do that. My neighborhood is great. I have several neighbors proudly flying the burgundy and gold every Sunday; there are quite a few 'Skins fans in the Baltimore region. It's great fun.
